Is it better to buy snorkle equipment in Caribbean or UK?

Rather than take everything with us, would it be better to buy snorkle equipment in St Maartin?

 

Not planning to necessarily use this equipment again other than for this cruise, we therefore wondered whether we could pick up some relatively cheap but serviceable equipment there rather than use up luggage space trying to take it over there.

 

Has anybody done this before? :)

If you think you'll not use the gear again, just rent it the one time you'll need it. Most snorkel tours include the use of equipment.
