You can and should do the online checkin. However you can still be bumped by not being physically present at boarding time. On domestic flight, that may be as little as 15 minutes before or 30 minutes depending on the airline. International is longer.

 

More like 10 minutes before departure, in my experience.

 

In the US the cut-off for check-in for domestic flights isn't even until 30 minutes before. For international it's usually 45-60 minutes.
