Train from Colon to PC and Back

We'd like to take the train from Colon to Panama City and back. The ship tour "Two Oceans by Railroad" has a return by bus. We'd like to avoid that. Anyone have any experience on taking the train both ways either independently or with a local tour?

 

We'll be in Colon on Sunday, March 7th from 7AM to 5PM on Carnival Miracle.

The present Panama Railroad passenger traffic is rather small. The latest information I am aware of is the railroad offers passenger travel to the Atlantic side from Panama City, (around 7AM) Monday thorugh Friday and a return trip from Colon late afternoon. The rest of the passenger traffic is solely for the benefit of the cruise ships. They have been doing the one way by rail and the other by bus for awhile now, Mario may be able to help you if you are staying in Panama.
