It all depends on the cruise line and the ship. Check on the board for the cruise line you’re going on and don’t forget to name your ship.

As far as the casino, you should use cash - you'll pay a fee to purchase chips using your ship card. We have been on some Holland America ships where they did let passengers pay for some things in cash - but we've sailed on RCCL and Celebrity and they did not.

As a general rule, the casino is the only place you can use cash on the ship. You can always charge chips to your onboard account, but I would definately bring a cash budget for the casino. Its alot easier to keep track of your money than to get surprised at the end of the cruise when the final bill comes in. No matter what line you are on, have fun and win big:D

Most ship casinos use cash in the slot machines. You put in paper money and play on credits. Most newer slots no longer spit out money when you cash out your credits, you get a paper slip instead that you can use in another machine or cash out at the casino cage. For everything else, cruise ships are a totally cashless society with everything you purchase going onto your sign and sail card.

On Carnival you set up a Player's Bank with your ship card. You can either put cash into the machine or access your ship account for $. You are able to transfer your winnings to your Players Bank. Easier done than said.

Many people will use the slot machines as an ATM and avoiding the 3% fee. The pit bosses I've encountered have encouraged this. The monies in your Players Bank is withdrawn at the cage.
