Can we check in early AM- Then see Venice?

DH and I are arriving in Venice, at 6AM, but do not leave port until 6 PM- (on Costa Victoria) We will not have time to see Venice after we return to port, so we will need to get in as much as possible before. Here is my question- Our package includes transfer from airport to ship- Since we arrive too soon to board, will we be able to drop off our luggage, and see Venice, and then check in at end of Day? or can we check-in, early AM then return to ship before it leaves? We are really excited to see Venice, but not sure how make the most use of our time.
