Why in the world do you guys want to go to Mexico?? The cruise is definitely the way to go, but not to Meheco. I haven't got much choice 'cause the lines ony go there from SD or LA. (unless you want a long trip thru the canal, or HI, where there's no casino on board) Mexico is such a poor country to visit. Maybe I had a bad trip or something. I just don't get off the ship anymore. I was there last T.G. on Carnival's Spirit. Wait,.....I think I know my problem,......I don't drink any more. Yeah, that's it. Well, in any case, I'm sorry to bore you, but you sounded like you needed someone to talk to. Have a great cruise, (you will love cruising) and if I do go away in Nov, maybe I'll look into your

ship, and give you a shout.

We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done...........Longfellow

Hi Rusty Aligator,

Well we have never been to Mexico... and from what we have been told and read, it's a ok place to visit. This being our very first ever cruise and we wanted to go some place warm and stay on the West coast. Mexico just seemed the best option. Unfortunately Nov is not a good time for me, as the holiday month's are very busy time.

After this cruise we will at least have some thing to compare our cruise experience by.

So wish us luck and maybe we can meet up on future cruises.

I do find it odd that some folks who go on cruises, never feel the need to get off the ship. I for one want to at least go walk around on land for a few hours and have some local cuisine. That's what cruising is all about to me.. port cites, local foods, and seeing they way other people live outside of the USofA. ;)

WOW, are you glued to the boards or what? I hope that you didn't get me wrong, I thot Mex is a nice place, but............ You WILL like San Diego tho. I hope you guys get there a day early to take in a few sights. I normally don't wander too far from the ship, but everything was just..THERE. I didn't do any crusing, but the sights were there to see. If you do any tours in 'pulco, make sure you do the ones run by the ship. Especially the jeep tour, lots of banditos out there. I am presently shopping for another cruise from SD, but I haven't found a "Deal" yet. I always travel alone, and it costs a bundle that way, we'll see. Sorry, but i gotta run,....ttyl......RA

We are leaving from Long Beach.. so no time for San Diego this trip. that's to bad.

I get emails whenever someone responds to a thread that I subscribe to.. so I know pretty quick when ever someone has posted a response.

Basically, just wanting to keep up on everything that we may want to do on this cruise and while in the 3 different ports. As I mentioned, this is our first cruise.. and it's also our 20th anniversay celebration.. so I want everything to go perfect as can be.

Other's like yourself who have done multiple cruises, may have differnet ideas as what to do and what to waste your time on.. we have learned so much.. but also we're only in our mid 40's and are pretty active young men ;), so we will definately be doing excursions that maybe more mature crusiers might not be interested in. Just saying, we want to hopefully get the most out of our cruse.

I still find it odd for folks to cruise and not leave the ship.. but that's what works best for them. Not us.

RAlligator, hope your next cruise is top notch for you.

I'm going Sept 26-Oct 3 on Carnival Splendor and got an excellent Solo rate for a Balcony on mid ship deck 6. So sorry I will miss you guys by a couple weeks. I have done this route about 5 times and love Mexico. I have been to Eastern, Southern and Western Mexico but prefer the West Coast.

It will be cold on the ship for the first few days and last few days so bring a jacket. Once we get about 1.5 days from LA it will warm up dramatically.

Usually there is little response on this board but I assure there will be gay people on board and there is usually a Friends of Dorothy (FOD) meeting in the Carnival Daily Paper.

JonV, sorry we're going to miss you by a few weeks.. sounds like the Mexico cruises are some of your favorites. I mean, for the bargain you get, the warm temps on land and the nice beaches and everything else that goes along with these cruises.. it was really a no brainer for us.

I never really considered bringing a jacket with us. I was reading that mid Oct temps will be in the mid 90's.. but I guess that is on land. so on the sea days.. it's going to be cooler sounds like. We'll pack a light jacket to be sure though. I'm a pretty hearty guy, and am used to some cold. ;)

I have heard of the FOD gatherings... I bet there will be one on our cruise too. If not, we'll see if one can be set up.

Jon have you been on Splendor before? If so, what bar/lounge is the FOD usually held in ?

It will be about 55 degrees and very windy at sea probably right when we leave LA and for the next 500 miles. A light jacket will be fine. I have not been on Carnival Spendor before but it will be nice. I've done 13 other Carnival Cruises.

Joan Heald will be our cruise director whom I love and if we are very lucky, Ned Rifken, the Ambassador of Swing (I think it is getting hot in here) will be singing.

NED RIFKEN EDIT:

Ned is going to be on some Holland America Ships during Sept-Nov per his website update.

Hello guys... our group took the Spirit last year on your same itinerary and we had a good time. Don't worry about negative comments about Mexico... you will enjoy yourself.

In Zihuatenejo we had a great time just walking around the town... there is a shopping district... nothing too much, but we walked around, had a few margaritas, talked to some locals and did some shopping. Very cute town... we had no interest in touring the newer condo and hotel section of Ixtapa.

In Mazatlan, take the tour to Colima... a nice Colonial town and very interesting way to spend a day. There is also some good snorkel diving there too, but the Colima trip is all day.

Acapulco has some simple tours of Fort San Diego, the zocalo and Cathedral, and of course the cliff divers. Unless you decide to do water sports, sailing trip, etc, it can be a pretty casual day, and still get back on ship long before you set sail.

We do a cruise every 12-18 months, and we had such a good time on the Spirit, we are doing the 9 day itinerary this year... to Puerto Vallarta, etc. If you guys are regular cruisers and want to join our group, you are welcome!

There was a GLBT/FOD meeting every night. It seemed at a bad place and time, so we spoke to the CD and he changed it for us, no problem. We had 26 last year, and met another 14-20 on the ship. Our group arranged for a gay tour of Acapulco and some of the other guys joined us... and it was nice to join up for pool time, sit together at the shows, etc. We are up to 34 so far this year and can't wait!

Maybe we'll all be on the same cruise in the future?

Cruise Bear's TIP

Take the embarkation photo together and don't be afraid to put your arms around each other or pose with your heads tilted towards each other.. Then when the embarkation photos are displayed you will be able to spot other gay couples onboard and they will be able to spot you.

As a single man traveling solo, I wear a rainbow t-shirt or gay identified shirt.

JonV, great idea on the photos.. we'll for sure take your advice on that. I would have never thought of it otherwise. Good tip.

Just got back and and had a wonderful time. The Friends of Dorothy Meetings were held in the El Mojito aft bar at 10PM every evening and we had about 12-18 people. It was our little Gay bar on the ship. We had ages from 18-70's.

Fun times JohV. we hope to have a similar turnout in two weeks.

Did you have the bar to yourselves or was it just the meeting place and other guest are there too? either way... i look forward to meeting some new people. Did you travel alone or with someone? Feel free to private message me if you feel more comfortable doing that instead.

thanks, AL and Rich

We shared the space with others. Quite a few people came and sat down in there and we wondered if they were gay and most of the time they were. So talk to everyone that comes into the bar as some people are quite shy and won't talk first. I traveled alone on this cruise. You will be into single digits on your countdown soon and then it will be time for you to sail. Our ship had a medical evacauation at sea at our first FOD meeting with a helicopter while the shipping was doing 22 knots. Also 2 people were kicked off the ship right after the muster drill. It was quite a cruise.

You guys are getting down to your final few days... and we are still over 100 days away! Wish we were on both!

Let us know how your cruise went... I like the sound of the Mojito bar. On my first cruise, I discovered a small bar... tucked away behind the casino that was where the staff and officers would sometimes hang out. It was my absolute favorite bar, and cruise. We got to meet several of the staff and the wife of the ship's engineer... boy could she tell stories!

So now... I always check out the bars to find the least populated, and if possible where there are a few staff. Last cruise I talked frankly with one of the photographers (they are contractors, not ship's employees) about where they hang out, and perhaps we could get together later. He was agreeable, but it was a very popular bar and half the ship's staff and contractors were there. He wasn't going to meet up in front of everyone, and I wasn't going to stay there and drink all night waiting for an off-chance at our time "alone."

A ship is like a little city... find your own neighborhood... and maybe it can be a "gayborhood!"

I hope you have a great time... let us know how you fare!

I too would enjoy talking with some of the staff.. just to get a different perspective on the cruise.

Your ideas of finding a small tucked away bar really sit well with me. although some times I really enjoy a more lively one too. i don't like it over crowded, but lively is ok.

Getting very excited now.. the days are flying by.. which is great. :)

Hi Cruise Bear,

we had a great time. Overall our first cruise was a huge success! :)

We realized on the second or third day how much fun and what a great bargain this cruise was. So we just enjoyed it. Made some new friends... talked to lots of fun and nice people as well.

I will write more later.. and I came down with Laryngitis on Friday.. so that put a little damper on the end of the cruise.. not being able to talk with the other guests.

Met a few gay couples and singles too.

We will for sure be booking future cruises. We even put down a deposit for a cruise some time in the next 4 years. :D Hopefully we won't be waiting that long though. ha ha
