Dress Code help needed

I have so many questions about dress code...

Can men wear a sportscoat on formal nights?

What about informal nights...do kids and men need to wear slacks?

What about women? What do they usually wear on informal nights?

thanks

What ship you are on. If your cruise lists formal nights, the dress is typically formal, tuxes or dark suits for men, long fancy dresses or cocktail dresses for women, dressy clothing for kids, too. Informal also can depend on your ship, ex. Carnival and RCI are going to be a little bit less dressy than Celebrity. Typically informal is perhaps the type of clothing you would wear to a wedding or a special occasion dinner.

Your cruise brochure will list the suggested attire for your length of cruise and let you know how many formal, informal and casual nights there are. Slacks and a collared shirt are typical of casual nights, Pants outfits or sundresses, skirts for women they kindly ask you do not wear jeans or shorts to dinner.

This question is jumped on frequently by people who are on opposite sides of the fence on clothing choices and the debate will rage on and on. The best I can say is, read your guidelines and don't fret over it too much. There is far more attitude on this board than there will be onboard a ship. When you are on a ship, there are mostly just a nice bunch of regular folks enjoying their vacation. You can ignore all the others.

Edit to add, you may wear a sportscoat on formal night, but you also may feel a little out of place.

It kind of depends on what line you are cruising, but in general formal means tux or dark suit for guys, fancy dress or long dress for women. Informal (or elegant etc) means sport coats, cocktail type dresses or fancy pant outfits for women. Casual means nice resort type clothes (no jeans or tank tops).
