Mountainduo Posted April 1, 2010 #1 Share Posted April 1, 2010 My wife and I will end a cruise in Shanghai, and fly home from Beijing. After the cruise, we won't have an abundance of time, but we would like to spend 4-7 days to get a little glimpse; neither of us has ever been to China before. We especially enjoy countryside, small villages, old cities....i.e. cultural/social history more than art and museums. An organized tour, or preferably some kind of escorted private tour seems most practical. Above all, we would want a quality, high-end tour, with meals, accommodations, and travel consistent with Silversea quality. Having looked online, we of course find an abundance of options; but it is so difficult to devine quality. Has anyone had any experience with a short tour of this kind? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
SonomaWine Posted April 1, 2010 #2 Share Posted April 1, 2010 We did 5 days in Beijing and arranged our own itinerary with A&K. We spent two nights at Commune by the Wall, and thought it was great. The private access to the wall, and the picnic they provide you with provides for a memorable experience. The remainder of the time we spent touring Beijing and having some wonderful meals in between. We stayed at the Raffles hotel and found it to be centrally located, and comfortable. Mountainduo Posted April 1, 2010 Author #3 Share Posted April 1, 2010 SonomaWine--Thanks for your suggestions...the hotel suggestions, especially for Commune by the Wall, were helpful. A&K??? Is that Abercrombie and Kent? Thanks
SonomaWine Posted April 2, 2010 #4 Share Posted April 2, 2010 Yes, in A&K is Abercrombie and Kent. We had an interesting guide, he was in his late 20's and a Pioneer in the Communist party. Needless to say, we had a different history lesson!

dwelsh Posted April 3, 2010 #7 Share Posted April 3, 2010 If you are going to be in Shanghai it is in close proximity by rail of Suchow, Wuxi and Nanjing. All places that could occupy a day of touring, ancient sites and beautiful gardens. I would suggest a local guide to assist you depending on your age, mobility and language skill!!
