maggie3 Posted April 2, 2010 #1 Share Posted April 2, 2010 We will be staying in a hotel near the Piazzale Roma in Venice after our cruise in the fall. It sounds as if the People Mover may not be ready by then. Would we take a vaporetto to Piazzale Roma? Are there other options? Would the correct vaporetto say "Piazzale Roma" on the front? Where would we find the correct vaporetto as we come out of the cruise port gate?

Where would we find the correct vaporetto as we come out of the cruise port gate? I would be surprised if the people mover isn't working by then. If it isn't then the 6/ bus may still be in operation. Note the / after the 6 A second choice would be a level walk to Tronchetto and then the no 2 Vaporetto to piazzale Roma. there is no vaporetto service to the cruise terminal. A taxi would be most convenient if the Tram isn't operational. We will know before your trip. http://www.europeforvisitors.com/venice has all the info you need. The destinations for the water busses are generally well marked but you should invest in a guide book and map if you want to entoy Venice as it should be
maggie3 Posted April 3, 2010 Author #4 Share Posted April 3, 2010 How long a taxi ride should we expect from the port to the piazzale, please, and how much should we expect to pay? Thank you for all advice.
Earl Rosebery Posted April 3, 2010 #5 Share Posted April 3, 2010 The City of Canals celebrates opening of important Cable Liner System Connection. "The second Cable Liner in Europe is implemented in Venice, the city of canals. Doppelmayr Italia Srl. was awarded the order in 2006. The contract with ASM (Azienda Servizi Mobilità), a company of the municipality of Venice, called for building a turnkey 870 m (2,854 feet) system. It connects the artificial island "Tronchetto" (parking spaces, offices, service centers, shopping streets; in future, the most strategically important traffic hub for Venice) to the "Piazzale Roma" in the historic city center. An intermediate station is located at the city's train station. Doppelmayr Italia carried out this contract in close cooperation with DCC Doppelmayr Cable Car GmbH & Co KG. The cornerstone was laid in June 2007, with operations started in March 2010. The costs have been at approximately EUR 18 Mio." This strange announcement appears on Dopplemayr's website. It appears that the builder of the system doesn't know the difference between the train station and the cruise terminal!

Thank you for all advice. 5 minutes . It is only 1/2 mile. The problem would be finding a taxi willing to go such a short distance. I don't know the minimum fare. Perhaps 5- 10 Euros

maggie3 Posted April 3, 2010 Author #8 Share Posted April 3, 2010 Thank you, Earl and Eileen for your advice. If need be, we will walk. Earl, are you saying the People Mover is operating already? We will certainly look forward to learning more as information becomes available.

We will certainly look forward to learning more as information becomes available. We walked it in October without luggage. It was no fun- traffic, narrow sidewalk on a highway ramp about 20 minutes. It would be worse with luggage. Other posts say the tram will finally open April 19.
sultan_sfo Posted April 3, 2010 #10 Share Posted April 3, 2010 Agree fully with you. We walked it twice Pier to P. Roma and back -- 4 trips altogether without luggage (Oct 2009). Our next trip -- Oct 2011 we will get a cab if we can get one! We walked it in October without luggage. It was no fun- traffic, narrow sidewalk on a highway ramp about 20 minutes. sultan_sfo Posted April 7, 2010 #12 Share Posted April 7, 2010 A little off-topic: When we walked on the bridge, we saw a continuous stream of public buses that went to and from P. Roma. What is the protocol for paying the fare if we board the bus? I believe the Vaporetto Pass is valid -- if we have one, do we just show the pass. If we do not have a pass, can one pay on boarding and how much. We will not be having any luggage.
JLC@SD Posted April 8, 2010 #13 Share Posted April 8, 2010 I have walked it several times with luggage. We have walked it before.....very easy if you are not overloaded with luggage. We will walk it again this May on our Crown cruise.
Love Cruis'n Posted April 9, 2010 #14 Share Posted April 9, 2010 Isn’t it incredible that the cruise lines (in our case Princess) don’t provide any sort of low cost shuttle to P. Roma! They just dump you off and let you fend for yourself! At 60 and 65 years of age, we’re too old to learn to ‘pack light’ and certainly too old to walk up and over the bridge with luggage in tow. We were fine in 2007 without luggage, but that was before knee surgery. Now - with 70 lbs in tow (each) it is not an option.
