They might take them down heading into a hurricane/typhoon, but other than then they're "permanent". :)

we had friends who rented one for the entire month and they loved using it (they had a corner one--larger than side ones) Said service for them was good and they loved the privacy. Very few cabanas were rented for this cruise according to them so they had the area to themselves most days.
