Travelex or Travel Guard for a Black Sea cruise. One covers terrorism the other has

Have you checked with your regular health insurance company covers you outside the US? If it does, the difference in medical coverage limits becomes less important -- you really just need enough to cover your co-payment or deductible.

Terrorism....learned this after a travel warning was listed by State Dept.for Middle East...and had Egypt cruise planned...they said,think it was Travel Guard,,,that THEY decided if cruise would be refunded, as it was their decision, forget State Dept.that determined Terrorism.....know it sounds unbeleivable , but true,,,,so I always call co. directly to see the wording in policy...just a heads up...by the way,,took trip anyway and were only 6 Americans on board....:eek:

The State Dept. lists many countries for years on end on the "Warning" lists. An entire country may end up on the list, even if unrest is confined to a particular region. (i.e. India or Pakistan) The terrorism coverage is generally geared towards specific incidents, not general, long-term unrest; I guess they figure that if general unrest really bothered you, you wouldn't have booked to begin with.

 

Confining coverage to specific incidents, and ones that occur in proximity to your actual destination, is not particularly unreasonable.

No plan that I know of (other than the obvious Cancel For Any Reason plans) allows you to cancel because of a State Department warning. It has to be an actual terrorist incident. Here's from one Travel Guard plan under their covered reasons for trip cancellation:

 

i) a Terrorist Incident in a City listed on the Insured's itinerary within 30 days of the Insured's scheduled arrival . . ."

 

And the definition of "terrorist incident" is:

 

"Terrorist Incident" means an act of violence, that is deemed terrorism by the United States Government other than civil disorder or riot (that is not an act of war, declared or undeclared) that results in Loss of life or major damage to property, by any person acting on behalf of or in connection with any organization which is generally recognized as having the intent to overthrow or influence the control of any government."

 

In general, travel insurance does not cover for what might happen, they only cover for what has actually happened.

The State Dept.warning was for Egypt, not just Middle East,,it was right after the tourist shootings in Luxor,,,,so I guess that WAS a terrorist "incident",,,,sorry, but still refused to pay when called...could have taken further action,I m sure....so I guess that means ALWAYS to buy "cancel for any reason" to avoid any questions about terrorism,since they are SO specific and still can refuse....needless to say, will learn from my mistakes...just an aside,,,had a good time regardless, but had machine gun escorts all the time....felt like royalty.....hahaha. but Thanks for your input for future.....;)

Next time find something on the State Dept web site calling it a terrorist incident, print it out, and send that along with a copy of your rejection letter from the insurer to your state's department of insurance attn: consumer complaints department and another copy to their fraud department and they'll be falling over themselves getting a check out to you.

 

Another lesson -- never get talked out of filing the actual claims paperwork by some rep over the phone. Fill it out and send it in. If you drop the matter after just a phone call you have nothing to take to arbitration or to review by your state's dept of insurance enforcement people.
