lots of women, no men

just back from my first ever solo cruise. Chose a short 5 nighter round the med for starters. Thomson cruises were very good arranging hosted lunch/dinner/coffee morning. but there were 8 women, no men. I asked the social hostess and she confirmed she had never had a man at her get togethers.

Whilst i am not on the look out for a pick up, I am a fairly recent widow, I do like male company.

Since my husband died the male halves of our friends have disappeared and the only males i seem to spend any time in conversation with are family.

Male conversation is often very different from female and it would be intereting to find out from you solo travellers if you have found there is a length of cruise/ area of cruise/ cruise line where the balance of sexes was more equal

You've made some excellent observations, but the fact of the matter is most men at that age are either not around anymore or are in no position to cruise. As far as cruise lines go I personally cruise Princess which is a much older demographic group than I am and if there's other singles male or female on the ship than myself(and there may be) I've never met ONE. Im anti-social so Im sure others on this board feel much different than myself, but cruising solo is not a good way to meet other singles, we make up less than .04 percent of global cruisers, it's simple math. If you think there were no men or singles on a 5 day cruise try a 10 day Im thee only single, I got the ship to myself its AWESOME!! If I were you I would try Cunard, either in the Med, or Australia/New Zealand and try either a 7-14 day sailing hope that helps Todd

I am also a single woman and though I have cruised before as part of a group (I am a high school teacher and we cruised the Greek isles with a group of students) and with a female friend around my age. I did not see any single man, either young or old. I saw a couple of frat boys on Carnival this past March but being in my 40's, they were not very appealing to me:p

If I were a single man, any age, I would go on cruises. I would be the only one there with many female to fight over me...haha...

I have not been on this forum very long but have you seen posts in the past from single men asking advice about solo cruising?

I have met single male cruisers of all ages on Carnival and to a lesser extent on Royal Caribbean- though there are definitely more solo women then men onboard.

My experience has been that men tend to travel with others - either friends or family as opposed to being solo - and so they don't end up sitting at a "singles table" for dinner the way that women do.

I run across them through other cruisers that notice I'm alone and comment on other solo travelers they've met on the ship...or at the lobby or martini bar having a before dinner drink...or on the top deck taking pictures. (I find that hobbyist photographers are particularly friendly and welcoming to conversations with strangers)

And there's always checking out the photo gallery for pictures that only have one person in them.

They come in all ages - and they are out there.

I'm a male who loves to cruise alone. And I've noticed I'm not the only one.

But I DON'T enjoy going to solo/singles events. And, indeed, I'm not looking to meet anyone. I prefer NCL where I can dine alone without problem.

So, I think men are there...but they just don't "participate." But no doubt there are not as many solo men as women.

thankyou for all your comments. I am only 55 so not really needing to look for lines with the' older age demographic' i think...... unless of course i was looking for a mate. It seems 55 year old men are looking for 30 something women (40 something at a push) so i suppose that would me as appealing to the over 70's LOL

I am also a male who tends to cruise alone. I'm 40, but I'm not a big fan of the late night party/disco scene so I'm usually more likely to be found on the deck reading or at a piano bar or singing karaoke or something like that.

I do find that there are way more single/solo women, which is just fine by me:)! I'm not necessarily looking to hook up in that way, but I'm single so I'm also not opposed to the idea. I'm going on the cruise to relax and get away from work stress.

As a solo male cruiser, I do try to be sensitive to approaching solo women because I don't want to be perceived as a "stalker" or "creepy solo guy". I've got enough female friends and family to know how uncomfortable unwanted male attention can be so I try to be kind of careful about it.

In my experience solo male cruisers are rare but non existant. For example on my last cruise there were 4 solo women and only 1 mat at our table. On my first cruise there were 2 solo males and 6 solo females at my table. however on most cruises, there are never that many sols and most are women.

I'm a happily married late-forties male who enjoys the occasional solo cruise. My DW and I enjoy cruising together but last Fall I cruised solo on NCL and thoroughly enjoyed it. As I wasn't on the lookout for 'companionship' I didn't go out of my way to attend the 'singles' gatherings. Instead, I just tried to be friendly and polite to whoever I happened to meet, and ended up meeting and conversing with lots of nice people. I often dined alone (I have no problem with that) but occasionally enjoyed the company of others.

Im really somewhat amazed that you folks have found other singles on your sailings, like any, I certainly hope thats the case because we need more solo cruisers. Im booking my 5th solo cruise next month and I certainly dont expect to see or meet any other solo's simply because I never have in the past. I have no interest in "hooking up" with anyone if I did I would do something else besides cruising. Princess doesnt have a singles table for dinner or lunch or breakfast for that matter, the Maitre D told me and I didnt ask or want one. I walked in the DaVinci dining room on the Emerald Princess 3 years ago, Godwin Castellano(hands down one the greatest floor managers I've ever seen or dealt with INCREDIBLE kid) I told him I was "by myself" and he told me they didnt have a singles table I told him I preferred to sit by myself, I asked him for a two-top put a wad of cash in his hand and I had a two-top by myself for the next 10 days, it's too perfect.

I've encountered the finest people I've ever had the priviledge meeting on cruise ships, actually all the seniors I meet be it in our CC group or simply on a tour with are stunningly wonderful human beings if you werent I would not only tell you(and get kicked off the CC boards for another 2 weeks!!:D) I would stop cruising with you and go do something else!!:D With that being said the line that I cruise with Princess (Im very devoted to this cruise line)may not be known for single cruisers but they take so good care of me and I have such an extraordinary time Im not really sure I want to cruise with anyone else, but BUT there are no solo's besides ME!!:D(Ok maybe I didnt look real hard but honestly I see terribly few solo's) I feel very blessed to be able to do things like this much less by myself Im not really sure I could cruise with anyone anymore I far to much enjoy sitting by myself, eating, drinking, laughing and watching you. Later Todd

On my Princess cruises I tended to be the only solo cruiser I knew of. On HAL I was seated at a table of 5 other passengers traveling alone and it was equally divided along gender lines. This was a real stunner for me but I was not surprised that none of the gentlemen cared to dance. One of these days I'm going to get to dance (and I don't mean by myself LOL) on a cruise.

Certainly dont take it personal that no "men' wanted to dance with you we men arent wired like that. On cruise ships all we "men" want to do is drink, eat, drink, sleep, drink, catch some rays, drink, eat some more, and uhhhhh drink. Dance??? Your kidding ...right??!!:D Gosh no offense but that sounds like too much work. We "men" would much rather sit(find a hole) in Adagio listen to classical piano and drink 007 Grey Goose Martini's till 3am, works for "us" everytime. Hmmm think I may be on to something. Good luck Todd

Dance=2 shotsAbsolute+2percocets+3shots Goose+2 more perc's:D and that MIGHT get me outta my chair!!!ROTFLMFAO

OMG I must be a !honoury! man as that's a pretty accurate description of what I do on a cruise. only thing I'd add would be and go to the spa and have a quick look at the shops. It's ironic that as a female who doen't want to dnace, invariably one of the entertainment trop always seem to see it as their duty to get me on the floor - they haven't managed to part me form my Mojitos to date though!

Ok Ok I get it, most men and some women : ) take more motivation to hit the dance floor than others. It really isn't that big a deal to me as I really enjoy the casino (with drinks) and the piano bar (with drinks) and even just sitting at the bar (with drinks). Hmmmm a pattern?? Thanks for the chuckle.

Hello everyone, new to cruise critic. Going solo my first cruise........can't wait !!! I'm so glad I found this site and now know others cruise alone as well. Every time I would tell someone I was going alone I would get the funniest look ever. My husband is done with traveling and prefers to stay home and take care of our boxers.

My cruise is with RCI, 4 nights to the Bahamas. I got a GREAT deal.

Again I can't wait and I am already planning my winter cruise:):). Western Carribean this time.

I'm a middle aged single male but until yesterday I didn't know solo males don't cruise. I never even thought of it that way.

I've just finished reading this entire thread and though I consider myself aware of the ways of the world, I can't say I've been aware of some of the things I've read here. I'm a relatively healthy 51 year old out-doorsman. When I decided that a cruise would be a wonderful thing to do I never thought about meeting single women on a cruise. LOL. Heck, just the other day I was telling my boss that though the math suggest that there are more single women my age, I can't say that I've been able to specifically identify one in years; it's as if they are in hiding. I haven't tried or not tried to meet anybody in a long time. I'm just a happy and well adjusted guy who goes on about his day to day business and rarely thinks of these things. I do like women and I suppose I would, for the purpose of this conversation, qualify as an eligible bachelor. Without ever having considered some of these things before, I still might be able make accurate statements about some of these things.

First, the two things that will get the rest of my posts ignored by most women here. 1) I don't like to dance because I've never known what it was for. 2) I didn't like the dating game when I was a handsome 22 year old because I thought it was just that, a game. Those things being said, I like women very much. But I couldn't see me being sat down at a table with 6 single women my age by a Matre'd who is seating 7 single people for the purpose of mixing up 7 single people for singles meeting singles sake. That would scare me to death. Even if none of the women were there to put a single guy under scrutiny, how could he not be under scrutiny considering the meeting was set up for scrutiny from the start? At the same time, I'd probably very much enjoy a chance meeting with the great majority of the same people at that arranged seating.

I had hoped to meet people on my cruise but when considering that I thought a family to adopt me for shore excursions or other old guys like me or a cute young couple for the day or yes, a single lady but all parties were given the same fleeting consideration. Now that I know there will be 4 times the single women on my cruises than there are men I'd have to say.....I'm Capricorn. I love tall drinks with umbrellas in them and long walks on the beach. My number is 555......

LOL

Anyway, there are a bunch of us who don't like to dance but there are also a bunch of us who don't like smoke or to drink allot. Some of us don't even watch organized sports all day Sunday. Now that I've discovered that I'm the smallest cruising demographic I'll have to tell folks here that I my vision of this single male solo cruiser is sitting on the serenity deck in the shade during the day smelling the salt air, exploring whatever during shore excursions because I'm an explorer and eating fresh sea food at every turn because I live in the desert and haven't tasted good sea food in years. And because I'm an avid hiker and wilderness backpacker, I'm especially excited to think that the full moon cruise I've booked will see me on deck at 72 degrees with spotty clouds and a light breeze and a moon coming up out of the ocean the size of a frying pan at arm’s length. To me, these things are why this single solo guy is cruising.

I've said it in other threads here today, I'm very proud of the single women who will venture out into the world and just do.

I don't know if any of this rant means a thing to anybody but I appreciate ya letting a regular 'ol Joe have the time. LOL.
