Are you Karaoke Queens?? ( or Kings)

Recommended Posts

I'm the complete opposite. I can sing in front of people but I can't speak to them. Go figure. But I love singing karaoke and I sing every week here in my hometown. My last cruise was on RCI Mariner and I didn't enjoy my cruise nearly as much because their karaoke was all competition stuff and that takes the fun out of it for me. I want to do it for fun, not to win a competition. I'm a really good billiards player too but when someone challenges me to play in a pool tournament, I turn in to a complete biotch. No fun.

I am like you....I can sing forever...but give a speech and I have the presence of a frog....

Sadly the only time I get to sing is on a cruise ship. (which is one of the reasons we cruise sooo much)

It does help, "LHP."

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I was pleasantly surprised to read your answer to the second question ("on Carnival ... it is a MAJOR activity. It is an average of 3 hours a night. Sometimes all at once...sometimes with a 45 minute break thrown in there.") The only problem is that I have not yet ever been able to find a Carnival cruise itinerary that attracted me. I guess that I'll have to look again!

I wanted to explain why I mentioned NCL in the first question.

Due to a mistake (too complicated to explain), I thought this thread was in the Norwegian forum, rather than in the Carnival forum.

No worries...I would love to hear all the answers and see how other cruise lines operate!!!

(1) On which NCL ships have you found karaoke to be a major activity? Please mention something like ...

"On the ___, we had it 5 out of 7 nights, for an average of 90 minutes per night," or ...

"On the ___, we had it only twice out of 7 nights, for 60 minutes each night," or ...

"On the ___, we had it both in the afternoon for two hours (while at sea) and in the evening for two hours every night except Embarkation Day."

As I remember, the Dawn & Spirit had it every night, but only for about an hour in the evening.

(2) On which cruise lines and ships OTHER THAN NCL did you find karaoke to be a major activity? (If possible, please give details, as mentioned above.)

Carnival Triumph had it in the afternoon at the Casino stage and in the lounge in the evening. Both seemed well attended.

(3) On which cruise lines or ships have you found karaoke to be totally (or almost totally) ignored? RCI, but that was over a decade ago.

(4) On the ships where you have found karaoke, has it been done with music stored on CDs (which get lost or broken) or music stored on a computer's hard disk? NCL Dawn had a computer, and said they couldn't play my CDGs. The Spirit had a CDG player.

(5) Where you have found karaoke, which lines/ships have used overhead, big-screen TVs for the lyrics (visible to the singer and attendees), and which lines/ships have instead used only one small, low-level monitor (visible only to the singer)? Sorry, don't remember.

Also, some of the hosts/hostesses don't know about pitch changers. I've had to show a few of them how to use it. And some of the systems just don't have it or it is broken.

Keep on singin'.

Hello, folks.

I am "reviving" this old (May) thread to ask you for some information that will be very important to me. I just read/skimmed the entire thread and didn't find the key info mentioned.

In the past couple of years, I have cruised a total of 28 nights on one of the NCL ships, and one of my favorite activities has been karaoke (singing and listening) -- after not having ever even seen it before in my long life! I'd say that I enjoyed it so much that I wish that there were two or more hours of it available every day on every cruise.

And so, I'd like to ask all of you the following questions, hoping that you will answer any one or more of them (briefly or even at great length):

(1) On which NCL ships have you found karaoke to be a major activity? Please mention something like ...

"On the ___, we had it 5 out of 7 nights, for an average of 90 minutes per night," or ...

"On the ___, we had it only twice out of 7 nights, for 60 minutes each night," or ...

"On the ___, we had it both in the afternoon for two hours (while at sea) and in the evening for two hours every night except Embarkation Day."

I sailed on the NCL Sun from NOLA on a Seven Night cruise. We had Karaoke every night, but as a note, this was a Spring Break Cruise with over 700 College kids on board.

Karaoke was held in three different places, and only twice did we see the same K-host. It made it very disjointed. It proved to be very popular during the week, and by the end of the week was held in a large show lounge.

(2) On which cruise lines and ships OTHER THAN NCL did you find karaoke to be a major activity? (If possible, please give details, as mentioned above.)

It was not a major activity on the SUN, but because of the Spring Breakers, it was bigger.

On Carnival you will find Karaoke is a big event and held every night for between 3-5 hourse. It is also held in a large show room and is considered an important event.

(3) On which cruise lines or ships have you found karaoke to be totally (or almost totally) ignored?

NA

(4) On the ships where you have found karaoke, has it been done with music stored on CDs (which get lost or broken) or music stored on a computer's hard disk?

Very few ships will have mp3 systems and most will still rely on CDG's.

(5) Where you have found karaoke, which lines/ships have used overhead, big-screen TVs for the lyrics (visible to the singer and attendees), and which lines/ships have instead used only one small, low-level monitor (visible only to the singer)?

Again, on Carnival you probably find this on all ships. Many even have afternoon Karaoke in the hallway near the Casino.

Singing along is part of the fun.

Thanks, in advance, for your efforts!

There was one thing on NCL that was really neat (LHP read this!)

They had a "talent show" also, but they used judges from the Ship dancers and singers. Each cruise, one winner was selected, and sent to NCL Headquarters. I beleive it was once every six monts, a winner from all the ships would be slected, and receive a free cruise, and get to do a performance.

Ok Linda...have you booked NCL yet?

I had time to read all the threads and why it was brought back to the front.

I cruised on NCL Pride of Hawaii in 2007 and their host & system was not so good but they provided karaoke every day and it was very popular. By the end of the cruise, there wasn't a seat to be had. Filled to the gills. On my CCL cruises, karaoke is every night. The afternoons when they have it is usually family karaoke so the kids can sing but many adults sing too.

My KJ on the Elation was one of the best ever. She knew her stuff. Did the key changes and all. While other KJ's couldn't even listen for turning up a mic or turning up the music when a disc is quieter than others. Having a good KJ is so important so it was nice to see someone that knew her stuff.

I agree on the part about being entertaining. I don't want to do competitions because I don't want to win. I would not want to get up on the mainstage with all those people watching me. I would be happy to win for a night but not to do the final show with all the costumes and background dancers. That just ain't my thang. But when I was on the RCI Mariner (remember I only got to sing one song on one night of the whole 7 day cruise) but it was the best. The KJ was totally hilarious and was dancing & singing with me and it was a blast.

Most of the ships I've been on have the big screen behind you for the audience to follow along and also a tv in front of you so you don't have to have your back to the audience to see the words if you need them.

Most of my songs I'm not a big entertainer. It is all about song choice. When I get to bring my own CDG's, then we're good to go cuz then I can sing my favorite songs that I can get into. I also have my favorite parody that always get the place laughing and the KJ usually play it when the place is packed for the people that are waiting for the next venue to start like the late night comedy. It is a funny song about bad breath and its a remake/parody of the Faith Hill song Breathe. I can also do Goodbye Squirrel (Goodbye Earl parody). People love that stuff.

I also cruise to karaoke not the other way around so if there is karaoke happening, I'm there. I also always do early dining so I can get there when it starts which is usually around 9 sometimes 10.

Are any of you karaoke fans going on the Spirit Oct 17th? You'll see me there if ya are.:)
