Opera in Rome

I am assuming Teatro Dell’Opera.

Unless you are going on opening night, you will see everything from tuxes to khakis -- there wont be many of the latter if it's a gala. <grin> If you are in the side boxes, there will be more of the latter.

If I am in a "normal" seat, I wear an open shirt and sports jacket over dress slacks but you can easily go up or down scale without sticking out.

I assume you will be in a box (most seats are). If so, unless they have changed things -- it's been several years since I've been there -- it is open seating within the box. This makes it worthwhile to get there a bit early to try to grab one of the better seats in your assigned box.

If you are attending the open air summer season at Terme di Caracalla, the dress will be quite casual .. I would not feel the need for a jacket.
