RSGS315 Posted May 14, 2010 #31 Share Posted May 14, 2010 My late husband and I sailed on the Nordic Empress to Bermuda in the early 90's. The first night onboard my husband had played at the Caribbean Stud table for a while, and was just playing out his chips, as he wasn't doing well. I was standing behind him, and noticed that his hand was all red, and I thought that he had a flush. Well the gentleman sitting to his right said to me "look again" and when I put my reading glasses on I noticed that he had a Royal Flush. He won the pot of over $3,000.00 and because he always put a dollar into the progressive pot he won an additional $20,000.00, for a total of oveer $23,000.00. Since we had booked this the very last minute we had to take an inside cabin, as this was the only category available. Our cabin didn't even have a safe, so we had to take our winnings to the purser's office to put it in a safe. My husband's photo hung in the casino for several years, and strangers in our home town in New Jersey would often stop at our table in a diner or restaurant and said that they saw his picture in the casino on the ship. Some years later our son and daughter in law sailed on the ship, and the photo was still up, except a second man had hit a Royal Flush as well, and they had the captions with their names reversed. The funny thing was that the other gentleman was Orientel, and had also an orientel name. Our son took a photo of the pictures and it was too funny to see this. They finally removed the old photos when the ship was renovated and became the Empress of the Seas. We booked three different Royal Caribbean cruises with the winnings, so RCI got all the money back, but on our terms. Ginnie
Texas2steppers Posted May 14, 2010 #32 Share Posted May 14, 2010 Has anybody ever won it big in a casino on a ship? I won $300.00 playing blackjack on the Serenade last week and it got me thinking what the biggest winnings ever were. My DH won the slot machine tourney 2 years ago and won $1100:D. I won it in February and won a free cruise. I think it is interesting how some people get 1099s and others do not. Guess we were lucky that we did not receive one. knotIn1 Posted May 14, 2010 #34 Share Posted May 14, 2010 Did they really win X? Did they include how much they lost prior to the X winnings? Human nature...report winnings higher, report losses lower. On a message board never the less. You all probably did win, just how much after taking into consideration yout losses prior to the win. I lost $20. Or was that $200.....$2000.............
14Terry Posted May 14, 2010 #35 Share Posted May 14, 2010 Playing the slots, I've won about $100 on every cruise so far.I hope to keep the "streak" going, here in about 6 days! :D Congrats to all who have won!
chasetf Posted May 14, 2010 #36 Share Posted May 14, 2010 I'd like to see a thread, "Biggest Casino Losses." Doubt there would be many honest responses. The other thing that is curious is the winners never say how much they spent winning the jackpot. My mom would always tell us about winning this 5K jackpot or that 12K jackpot ... but never say how much she spent to "win" them. ;)

14Terry Posted May 14, 2010 #38 Share Posted May 14, 2010 chasetf, good point. I never spend more than $20 an evening, in the casino. I set my limit before I even go in. Small amount I know, but can play quarter slots for a while.:D

It's merely the cost of an evenings' entertainment..................
dixieva Posted May 14, 2010 #40 Share Posted May 14, 2010 If your winnings are over $600.00 and you are an American citizen a 1099 sould be issued. No 1099 for me when I won the $1,200 on the Empress. My daughter won $800 a few years ago and no 1099 for her either.

Law is $1200 on a single win. If you win more than $1200 in a single pull/spin, a 1099 is required. I have stacks of 1099's, I know how it works
tyler6597 Posted May 14, 2010 #42 Share Posted May 14, 2010 On a Princess cruise I wont the jackpot bingo for $2500.00 and then walked into the casino and got the last seat for a slots tournament. Won that and $500.00. That night I went to play the slots and won $1000.00. Luckiest day of my life as far as gambling. I've also won slots tournaments on three other ships. We took the winnings from the Princess cruise and paid for another cruise and still had a bundle left over. Good times.:D:D:D:D:D:D

weary traveler Posted May 14, 2010 #44 Share Posted May 14, 2010 I won $1,000 on the crack-its one morning at sea aboard the NCL Majesty, went to the casino window and collected the cash and figured.."ok here's my mad money" half hour later as my wife is sunning by the pool, over the PA comes the announcement .. "Congratulations to Paul ********, our newest $1,000 winner in our crack-its sweepstakes..." only problem i was in the elevator coming up to see her and didnt hear it.. she laid in the lounge chair with her hand out. (sighs) and then later that week in the casino (she doesnt play) i handed her $10 to play this "cute" machine.. she taps me on the shoulder and says "what does this mean???" (1,875.00 jackpot) sighs.... it doesnt pay to be a man..

pmkejk Posted February 2, 2011 #47 Share Posted February 2, 2011 Four years ago on the Jewel of the Seas I won $1000 on the Wheel of Fortune machine (I won it on the second day of the cruise and took all of it home). On the last night of the cruise my husband ran out of his $50 to spend in the casino so I gave him $15 to play with. He put it in another Wheel of Fortune machine and won $1000. :D That is the most we have won. Mostly we just go in with a nightly donation and have fun playing. rburke Posted February 2, 2011 #50 Share Posted February 2, 2011 My son won $13,000 playing blackjack the first night of a cruise on Rhapsody in 2006. No 1099 was issued. He did get a membership in the Royal Caribbean High Rollers Club, a couple of nice polo type High Roller shirts, a set of cufflinks from the pit boss, and wine delivered to our table every night at dinner. Every cruise he's been on since he's had a bottle of wine in his room when he boarded and a bottle of wine delivered at dinner each night. YMMV
