mahondi2389 Posted May 19, 2010 #1 Share Posted May 19, 2010 Can someone tell me the do's and don't's about the proper dress codes for women in Izmir/Istanbul? I'm looking forward to my cruise and seeing the Blue Mosque etc, but want to be sure I'm not turned away because of what I'm wearing. Anyone have any advice, please send it on. Thanks.
Capricruiser Posted May 19, 2010 #2 Share Posted May 19, 2010 Don't wear short shorts, sleeveless shirts, tank tops, etc. and you'll be fine. Turkey isn't as fussy as many Islamic nations but if you want to cover your hair with a scarf or veil that's great but not at all necessary. I suppose "good taste" would be the best way to suggest it. Respect them and they'll respect you.
AmoMondo Posted May 19, 2010 #3 Share Posted May 19, 2010 I agree with Capricruiser. Another possibility is if you do want to wear a sleeveless top because of the heat, you can take a thin silk (or other material) large scarf/shawl with you and drape that around your shoulders when in mosques - that is what i did when I visted istanbul. Garyorient Posted May 20, 2010 #4 Share Posted May 20, 2010 Also worth checking out when Ramadan is. There are levels of respect regarding eating and drinking in public places which maybe should be observed simply for common decency and courtesy duing that period.
