I am excited to be visiting Curacao on our next cruise, but we are there from 1pm to 10 pm. I'm wondering if we will have time to do a shore excursion and still be able to shop. Also what is there to do after dark?

Not much.! but that is the nice part. You can watch the sun go down from the beach. the shops will probably stay open a little later than normal... You can hang anywhere close to the pier and have a wonderful time. The Rif-Fort area is right there at the Megapier which has LOTS of restaurants and bars and such. they also have a great view from the top. You can just walk around, cross the foot bridge, etc.

I loved watching the sun set !!

If you plan on shopping, do take american coins with you -- most stores do not have change (we found that out on our last cruise) and the casinos are not always able to give you change either. There is a charge to use credit cards here as well.

There is a kiosk for tours to the left after you cross the bridge-- head there for recommendations/taxis/beach options.

If you are cruising on Princess -- lucky you. The ship docks right across from the town and the bridge is steps from the ship. Otherwise, the other cruise lines park a little further away and you have to walk through the Marriott/fort area to get there; but, it is only 3-5 minutes away.

Most credit cards charge a foreign exchange fee.

You can do the shore excursion and also have time to shop. But you can do the shopping first and then the shore excursion. At night you can sit at Riffort and have a drink or take a night tour.

See curacao.com for info

If you are on a cruise that docks in the center of town, make sure you are on deck as you enter the port. It is one of the prettiest ports in the Carib.

The fort is nice to visit because of the shops, restaurants and views.

We have never been there at night but while I was walking during the day I started to wander a little too far and saw that I was getting into what appeared to be the seedier part of time. So stay in the central areas where most of the tourists are. We have friends who winter in Aruba and that is pretty safe, but they say Curacao has a much high crime rate. Lots of petty thefts.
