smoke on ships

Why should non smokers have rights but smokers do not? If you don't like the smell of smoke get an inside stateroom and don't go anywhere. That would solve your problems with smoke.

I agree, maybe OP should try another type of vacation. Smoking is alive and well on Carnival. :) The Cigar Bar is BACK!!:)

We had been excited about planning our first cruise until I began to read about all the smoke on the ships. My daughter has asthma that is exacerbated by cigarette smoke and I tend to get sinus infections if I am around smoke. While I don't expect a cruise ship to be smoke free, will we be able to avoid most of the smoke if we stay out of the casino and bars? Is smoking allowed in the restaurants?

Your daughter should avoid the casino, the bars, and the outside deck where that big smoking funnel is.

I will agree with other posters. Designated smoking areas vary a little depending on what ship you sail.

Best places to avoid would be the casino, bars and port side where smokers have the right to smoke. Lido decks vary from ship to ship as do the piano bars.

There is no smoking in any area around food or in the main theater.

You should be fine.

Have a great cruise.:D

your alowed on the STARBOARD SIDE not port

To be a cheerleader you have to be for something so I guess you are a smoking cheerleader!:D As a non smoker without pom poms the main place for you to avoid is the casino. I do gamble a little and I expect to smell like an old ashtray when I leave:eek:. My choice so I don't complain. The previous statement was just that not a complaint. I have never had a cabin that smelled of smoke so they do a good job. Funny story after our stop in Jamaica last time we smelled a funny smoke in the hallway.....Hmmmm wonder what that was?

No pom poms here either . . . I hate being addicted to nicotine, but I fought the booze battle and won, so I guess I can enjoy one vice on those areas its allowed on the ship. I do feel sorry for those that have to tolerate the inconsiderate smoker in places its not allowed onboard, so therefore I tried to make an honest knowledgeable evaluation of those areas where smoking is and isn't allowed for the OP.

In my humble opinion[operative phrase] the non-smoking "cheerleader" would be that person that sees you light up in a smoking area far forward of you on a ship making 22 knots and does the wafting of imaginary smoke away from her/his nose. Ironically, these are sometimes the same people whose cheap overly-applied perfume would melt the paint off a wooden pony. But I digress.

Your "funny story" is a very common story and would be true of almost any Caribbean port call.

Was on the Legend a few weeks ago. I am a Cigar smoker. I refrained from smoking on the balcony (even though I was allowed to) just to be a good neighbor. I smoked a few cigars in the designated cigar area which is the Dreamteam lounge. What gets me is the people that come in that area and mumble & complain how smokey it is in there. Remarkable.

You will be OK in the restaurants.

Right now Carnival still allows more smoking in more places then most other cruise lines.

So you might want to look at lines like Celebrity or RCI which have much less on-board smoking.

Not a non-smoking cheerleader but here are my observations:

Just off the Freedom a few days ago and being an experienced cruiser with mostly other lines, I would have to say that the public or Promenade deck five on this ship was extremely somkey and most of the bars allowed smoking throughout rather than having just a designated smoking area as on other ships. Yes, people smoked around the piano including the piano player.

My husband's alergies flared up too so while we did try to enjoy some music in this area, etc., mostly we avoided it which is too bad. Of course the food areas are non-smoking except you may encounter it around the pool where the hamburger grill is.

My choice is to avoid this ship in the future due to smokiness and overcrowding of too-small public areas.

Yikes! The Freedom was our favorite ship so far. Surprised at your comments. We didn't encounter this last November.

I am a reformed smoker. I detest the smell of cigarette smoke. While there are a few violations of the rules on every ship, I have never found it difficult to get away from the smoke. I do not like to get near the casinos on most of the ships as they smell like the bottom of an ashtray that has not been cleaned in 6 years.

I do not think you will have difficulty with DD's asthma. Keep her rescue inhaler at hand and be as vigilant as you are at home.

Smoking is already recognized as a serious public health hazard but it's treated as a "lifestyle choice" instead of a threat to public safety.

Until that changes, ships will continue to capitalize on the addictions of smokers while doing their best to minimize the exposure to non-smokers. It's not perfect, but unless DDs exposure is drastic or reactions severe, you will have a wonderful time.

Personally I have found the smoke on ships an annoyance but far less so than the chair hogs. Though I hope the smoking regulations are more strictly enforced than the chair hog rules.

The only true "choice" a smoker makes about smoking is wether or not to smoke the FIRST cigarette. All the rest are smoked out of self preservation to avoid the painful withdrawal symptoms. Have some mercy. They can't quit while facing job pressures and when they finally get a vacation they don't want to spend it in withdrawal. They need a safe place to self-medicate on the ship that respects their dignity.

Two questions from a newbie.

Can we smoke cigars on our balconies?

What ports can you get Cubans at?

I hope Carnival gives cigar smokers the same lattitude that they give regular smokers.

In my experience, you will likely encounter smoke on your ship, probably even if you avoid the areas that are smoking. I have on all of my cruises (only three, but still...). Most recently was Friday when a man was smoking a cigar on the tender at Belize... even after he was asked by the tender crew to put it out. :)

Carnival does not prohibit cigar smoking on balconies.

Cubans can be bought anywhere outside the US or their possessions. Ensure you only purchase from Habanas SA approved stores to avoid counterfeits.

Nope. As was stated, need to be very careful where buying them when ashore, as most are fake (in Nassau, something like 90% sold are fakes). On-board selection is actually okay and prices reasonable.

Find "Cigar Aficionado" thread here with many suggestions on where to buy.

As a former smoker I can now see both sides of this issue. I find I still side with those lowly smokers. I do not believe you will have a problem with cigarette smoke unless you park yourself next to the guy smoking his giant Havana Stogie.

All smokers are quite good at observing the designated smoking areas. I must admit, I have gotten a whiff of that 'forbidden' whacky leaf while out on the balcony from time to time. No big deal. Enjoy your cruise.

All the people who think they should ban smoking on ships so also ban fat people, loud people, people who get drunk, give me a break. Most non smokers think the ships should cater to them only, what a joke.

Wouldn't that be cigar smoke?

Not flaming you, and most people don't know this, but purchasing any Cuban product anywhere in the world by an American citizen is technically [operative word] illegal.

And, yes, true Cubans are only merchandized at Habanas SA approved stores. And they're soooooooooooooooo good. :D Monte Cristo #2, pure heaven. :)
