Renting a Jeep in Cozumel

Thinking about renting a Jeep in Cozumel for my family. It will be my husband, my 4 year old son and myself. I hope to check out Punta Sur, San Gervasio ruins and grab some lunch. The jeep rental after adding all the insurance is about $80 for the day.

Do you guys think this is a bad idea? I've been to Cozumel at least 5 times before and I feel rather comfortable there. Any other site seeing recommendations?

Also the Dream docks at Cozumel at 10 and we have to be back on board at 5:30. Do you think I can fit all that in and be back in time?

That should all be doable in the time that you have depending on how long you stay at Punta Sur. Suggest renting a convertible Volkswagen beetle from Isis (http://www.islacozumel.net/services/isis/) in town. We've used them several times.

Be sure to check out the beautiful beaches on the East side on the way down to Punta Sur.

A non-stop drive around the island can be done in an hour.

we rented a jeep from avis and had a great time :)

i kinda second the car idea , the jeep was a stick shift (if that matters to you) had no air conditioning (which truly sucked;)) and i think my kids would have preffered the comfort of a car with a/c

either way , you'll have plenty of time to enjoy your day:cool:

With a kid during the summer, I would opt for something with AC. My Jeep from Avis had AC and was an automatic but I did reserve it ahead of time.

Last trip we visited the ruins and traveled the entire eastside of the island and had lunch at a great beachfront restaurant named Playa Bonita.

Those of you who have rented in Cozumel, correct me if this is wrong info, but it is second hand :) ...

When we were on our Costa Cruise, our MDR table friends rented a Jeep. They said that you have to have the deductible IN CASH, should you get in an accident, otherwise you get arrested. Is this true? I have no reason to not believe them and if it is true - word of caution to definitely get good insurance.

I am not sure if this is the law or not, we rented from Avis which is an international company and were never told this. We did opt for the Avis insurance because it was specifically for Mexico, with that said the total was still less than $100 for the day. $100 for the freedom and flexibility to explore the island at your own leisure........priceless.

I still remember the faces of other passengers cramming into those tiny sub-compact taxi's as we cruised by with the top off on the Jeep....

If you don't have full coverage Mexican insurance, you will have to pay up before you are allowed to leave the island. No, the insurance that comes with your credit card won't count. You'll have to pay then/there and hope to get reimbursed when you get home.
