one full day in Anchorage

Hi, We arrive in Anc on Wed at 3:30, the Thursday we have completely free. Then we go on Friday to Talkeetna and on to Denali as part of our cruistour. Would you recommend Seward as a good day trip for our free day?

Any and all suggestions are welcomed! This is our first visit to AK. We are more interested in seeing sights and the beautiful landscape of AK than in actually hiking, fishing, etc.

Thanks!

For me, I never consider Seward as a day trip. An alternative, possible, would be to go to Seward your arrival day with a rental car and overnight there.

What is your priority, there is plenty to overall consider.

Because it is too far or because there is too much to see.... or both? I don't have a priority other than to see as much as we can during our visit.

In a day trip, Anchorage Seward is at least 6 hours on the road. IF you want the top tour- Kenai Fjords boat trip- that's another 6 hours. IF you take the train, add two hours.

I suggest you do your homework on Anchorage and Seward- find out WHAT is available and make yourself a list of your interested activities. THEN make your plans to be there.

I have been researching what we will do for our day in Anchorage and have collected some websites:

http://alaska.org/driving/classic-day-drives.htm

http://www.anchorage.net/2035.cfm

Maybe you can find some ideas that would appeal to you.

Thank you so much for those sites. I have been googling day trips from Anchorage, but you have added some that I hadn't found yet. I appreciate your time!:)

My suggestion is a day trip out here to the Mat-Su valley. You can see some fabulous places. Thier is the Musk Ox Farm, raindeer farm, you can see Hatcher pass, also check out Wasilla and the Iditarod sled dog headquarters. If you want to drive a bit up the road. You could check out the very small city of Houston and go to Millers Market and get some fabulous ice cream. Also check out Biglake which is a great recreational area.

The one main Highway between Anchorage and Denali/Fairbanks is called the Gourge Parks Highway. If you want to go as far as Talkeetna in a day for a great drive. Its douable but it will make for a long day.

If you just want to go as far as Houston/Biglake then thats very douable and makes a great day trip.

Also Thier is lots to see and do in Anchorage for a day as well so it all depends on what you want to do to.

I always recommend coming north a bit as its fabulous and thier is plenty to see and do. While seeing the Musk ox and raindeer farms, you can also check out downtown palmer a very small city with a very rich old history that dates back to the "New deal".

You can check out the book called the Milepost which also has its own webpost. We do pretty much everything in Alaska by Mile post hence the name "Mile post".

Adri :)
