Buddy604 Posted June 17, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 17, 2010 I know I'm always curious about when my favorite ships are going to be renovated, or just refreshed, (I love that International Cafe!), but the actual schedule does seem to move around a bit. I dug a current copy out of the Princess Answers database for easy reference. The schedule shows the ship, it's scheduled date for drydock or wetdock, and the dockyard location that's handling the refit. Having been on a cruise right before a scheduled drydock, where work was already being done on the ship in preparation, I also use the list to check my plans, and bear those inconveniences in mind if and when I book a cruise abutting a scheduled drydock. Here's the list as it is published today. I'm not sure about the Royal Princess dates - this list may have been drawn up before she was selected to leave the fleet for P&O at the end of the year: Caribbean Princess November 8 - 20, 2011 Freeport Coral Princess September 22 - October 2, 2012 Victoria Crown Princess October 26 - November 5, 2011 Freeport Dawn Princess May 20 - 30, 2012 Brisbane Diamond Princess October 20 - November 3, 2010 Singapore Emerald Princess December 7 - 17, 2012 Freeport Golden Princess May 9 - 20, 2012 San Francisco Grand Princess April 11 - May 5, 2011 Freeport Island Princess September 20 - October 4, 2010 Victoria Pacific Princess January 13 - 27, 2010 Freeport Royal Princess May 2 - 10, 2011 Freeport Ruby Princess December 11 - 23, 2011 Freeport Sapphire Princess January 7 - 28, 2012 Victoria Sea Princess September 20 - 30, 2012 San Francisco Star Princess April 1 - 22, 2012 Freeport Sun Princess April 16 - 29, 2010 Brisbane Ocean Princess December 2012 Singapore

Working 2 Cruise Posted June 17, 2010 #3 Share Posted June 17, 2010 Thank you! I see I will be sailing a couple of weeks after the Crown comes out of drydock... I will hope for the best!
DanJ Posted June 18, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 18, 2010 Interesting that the Diamond (2 weeks) and Sapphire (3 weeks) have different lengths of downtime scheduled. Also looks like perhaps the Grand (24 days) and Star (21 days) will get the Golden treatment.

ghoundlvr Posted June 20, 2010 #6 Share Posted June 20, 2010 Uh, oh. It looks like the cruise I have booked on Crown leaves the very next day after drydock/wetdock. Maybe that's why I can't find anybody on Roll Call for that sailing...they all knew better! Seriously, have others had bad experiences after drydock/wetdock or just before the ship goes into dock? This will be first cruise on Princess and I am hoping it is a good one! Brenda
Pythian Posted June 20, 2010 #7 Share Posted June 20, 2010 Thanks! I knew she (the Island) was going in, but it is nice to see the schedule has stuck. As David noted above, is there anyway we can know 'what' is being done in the Drydock? According to your upcoming cruise schedule you are going in 2010 and the list below shows the Crown is going into drydock 2011. Am I missing something here? Buddy604 Posted June 20, 2010 Author #9 Share Posted June 20, 2010 Seriously, have others had bad experiences after drydock/wetdock or just before the ship goes into dock? This will be first cruise on Princess and I am hoping it is a good one!I have personally only been on a cruise just before dry dock, and that was the Golden Princess last year. It was a fairly major refit so they started doing some of the work on our cruise - one of the smaller pools I believe was drained, the casino was shut the last three or four days since it was being moved up a floor, and there was some construction and work going on aft that annoyed a number of passengers. I was midship, in an unobstructed-obstructed (E319) and had no problems, but a large number of the passengers complained and eventually received a small future cruise credit. Post dry dock can be a luck of the draw situation. If the drydock went well, you usually only have some small hiccoughs as the crew adjusts to new equipment and procedures. If the dry dock is a disaster, the ship can limp out with problem areas and uncompleted renovations. It's very rare, but it does happen, and they can either abandon a planned upgrade until a later dry dock or continue the renovation if possible during the cruise - similar to the was they pre-renovated on the Golden. I believe the Star had a bad drydock some years back, and one of the QE2's refits in the 80s or 90s was so bad, they canceled a certain number of passengers to make room for the men and equipment to keep working on her at sea. I haven't heard any more recent horror stories, so I wouldn't get too worried.
wizard-of-roz Posted June 20, 2010 #10 Share Posted June 20, 2010 Some things may be closed due to re-carpeting, etc. We had two shops that were closed when were onboard a ship right before a drydock. It really didn't make any difference. All the stuff that was usually sold in that shop was moved to another. We were on the Golden right after her drydock and nothing was closed [at least, not where you could notice] and she looked and felt fabulous. The changes were fantastic. fun cruiserz Posted June 20, 2010 #11 Share Posted June 20, 2010 We are sailing on the Crown the day it comes out of drydock Nov 5, 2011, so here's to hoping everything will go well at the drydock and not have any unfinished issues.
happytalk44 Posted June 20, 2010 #12 Share Posted June 20, 2010 We were on the CB the first cruise out of dry dock and it was a disaster. Had contractors for the first 5 days and venues were closed for days--casino etc. Boarded 5 hours late and sailed 8 hrs late. Kept like live stock in the convention center in San Juan and all 3000 boarded together.

jeffstew Posted June 21, 2010 #16 Share Posted June 21, 2010 When did it have drydock....and what was done? We are sailing her in September......thanks! I think it was this past December or January. Not much could have been done, since it looked brand new to me when I was on it in October, 2009. Probably just some painting and other minor touch-ups. Kind of like a tune-up! Infi Posted June 21, 2010 #19 Share Posted June 21, 2010 Thanks for composing the list, it's really great. Anyone have any guesses what could be accomplished in a 14 day drydock? Thinking specifically about the Island.
Whimsy Posted June 21, 2010 #20 Share Posted June 21, 2010 Thank you for the information. I just booked the Crown for January 2012 and am taking some first time cruisers and first time Princess cruisers. I was a little nervous about the Crown being a bit older and was wondering if it was scheduled for a dry dock. I want everyone to be happy on their cruise since they are all sailing because of me. Bohemian Posted July 6, 2010 #21 Share Posted July 6, 2010 Sapphire PrincessJanuary 7 - 28, 2012 Victoria That's a long dry dock, about a week longer than the rest. I wonder if it's because there's more work to be done or less workers to do it. We were on the Sapphire last month and she's still as good as new. Thanks for post the info. Passin Thru Posted November 3, 2010 #25 Share Posted November 3, 2010 Grand will likely get MUTS if it doesnt have it, shore power, new carpet, new mattresses, new paint top and bottom in drydock and a few surprises. Look at the cruise Cruise planner fro Alaska and it has most of the changes, compare those with your brochure.
