Venice - distance and transport to train?

Hoping Gem Venice experts can help:

what's the earliest we can disembark in Venice and how long does it take to the main train station? What's the best and fastest transport to the train station? We would love to make a 9am train, if possible.

If it helps, we'll be in a suite ...

Ask Ruth to organise a taxi, it will take 10 minutes, 15 in traffic providing you get off the ship early. Hope that helps.

wow - talk about fast response! Thanks.

That would definitely work for us - no check in time for the train, BUT provided we would be able to disembark very promptly - how soon after 8am would we be able to get off?

People were self-disembarking off the Gem on May 8th by 8:15 am. We could see them from our aft balcony. You could walk to the train station if you can pull all your bags in 10-15 minutes. A taxi would be easier and would cost 10E or a little more.

Just got off the Gem yesterday. Ruth will escort people off the ship at 8:15. From there you will take a shuttle to the P. Roma and it is a short 5 minute walk over a bridge to the train station. You can always have the concierge (Ruth on ours) organize a taxi for you, or take one that is there. Our train left at 10:27. We left the ship on our own, taking our luggage with us, at 9:00 and it took about 30 minutes to get to the train station. The longest part was waiting for the shuttle, which is NOT organized by NCL. If you decide to take the shutlle, I would recommend a 10 am train.

If one is not fortunate enough to have a suite, can we still self-disembark if we have carry-on only? We are renting a car at the airport and driving to the Dolomites and need to arrange the pick-up time for the car. Do we have to wait for suite people to get off first or can we self-disembark early as well?

Thank you.

You should be able to get off the ship by 8.30 at the very latest. If you only have a carry on then its not a bad walk to the train station. If you have heavy luggage, don't walk it as you have to go over a bridge with at least (so it seemed) 1,000,00 steps.

So (with carry on bag only) you should be at the train station by say 9; get your tickets and validate them and on the train by 9.30 and at the airport by 10am.

Land taxis cannot get you to the train, it is, as has been noted, across a bridge with many steps on both sides. Keep that in mind if you have significant luggage.

If you want to travel quickly and directly by land taxi, use the Venice Mestre train station. The cab can go right from the port to the station in about the same amount of time it will take you to get to Piazzale Roma by shuttle and drag your stuff across the bridge.

As for the car rental, why go all the way to the airport and pay the airport surcharge to pick it up? All of the car rental agencies have offices in the parking garages at Piazzale Roma where the Gem shuttle will drop you off.

Venice has two train stations (i) St.Lucia in Venice proper across a pedestrian bridge accessed from Piazzale de Roma . Piazzale de Roma is accessed on foot, or by road taxi or bus from the Cruise Boat terminal . (ii) Maestre is the station at the end of a long causeway at the Italian mainland end of the causeway. That Maestre station can be accessed by road taxi direct from the cruise port in Venezia.

So coming from the mainland trains stop first at Venezia Maestre, then approximately 8 mins later terminate at the dead ended Venezia St.Lucia station . To descend the steps on arrival at St.Lucia and have the Grande Canal at your feet is one of life's great travel experiences .

So take a road taxi direct from the Cruise Terminal to Venezia Maestre railway station and you will be fine. Just check that your train stops to pick up at Venezia Maestre station .

If you are traveling to the Venezia Santa Lucia Train Station and are pressed for time, take a private taxi to Piazzale Roma (around 10 euros) and walk across the Santiago Calatrava Bridge to the train station (10 Minute walk, not an easy walk with luggage).
