Civitavecchia - Rome by private train question

We are on Ruby Princess starting 7/4, and have booked the Rome excursion by private train through Princess. Does anyone know, can we take an earlier train back from Rome than the one Princess has us on, and is there a shuttle from the Civitavecchia train station to the ship? Thanks.

Ooh. What are they charging you for this private train? Do you know that you can take the regular train for 9 euros r/t? This includes metro and buses while in Rome. It is very simple to do and there are a TON of threads here on how to do it. I would imagine if it's a 'private train' you will only be able to take their scheduled departure. You would have a choice of a lot of times using the public train.

There is a free shuttle from the ship to the port entrance, then it is about a 10 minute walk to the train station. Just turn right where the buses drop you off and walk straight down that street parallel to the water; the station is on your left about 4 blocks up.

Hope this helps

We took the Princess private train on May 1, Italy's Labour Day holiday. It is a very expensive ride to town. We only did it because we had heard that public transport on that holiday was chaotic. When we returned on May 8 we used the local train. You do not have any option about return time on the private train. We left for the ship at 4:30 from the San Pietro train station. That station is where the train stops in the morning. The tour rep. on the train then walked those going to the Vatican to that site. She also was pushing the purchase of hop on hop off bus tickets. Some people who bought those tickets were not too happy with the service as traffic was really bad that day. When we returned the following week, we rode the local train to the Ostiense station walked the tunnel to the Pyramide metro station and rode the short distance to the Coliseum stop to explore ancient Rome. We returned to the ship from that station but it is nice to have the option of going to San Pietro if you end your day near the Vatican.

A lot depends on what you intend to do and your comfort level touring about on your own. Of course you are really on your own if you go by private train after the rep. shows you how to get to the Vatican. There were a few people with mobility issues who found the stairs at the train stations difficult.

We thoroughly enjoyed the cruise you are taking. Hope you do too.

See you soon
