Just off the Dawn 6/13-6/20

Rest easy, I will be sailing on the DAWN this Sunday. I too can not stand second hand smoke. I'll let you know what I find.

I was also on the same sailing and did not notice a lot of smokers. I have a 9 year old child with asthma and smoke is a trigger for him, so I am always looking out for that for him. I did not notice any excessive smoking, actually did not even see much at all. I was in the kid's pool area a lot, and never noticed anyone smoking there. I also thought we had excellent service everywhere and the food was very good every place we ate, even the buffet and MDR's. Funny how so many different people have different opinions on the same cruise! I will definitely cruise NCL again!!

 

(as an aside, the drinking games for the pub crawl were on the smoking side of the deck, so there were not really any kids there to witness it. We were sitting on the non smoking side (with children) and they did not know what was going on on the other side.)

I agree, that having met and conversed with Hugo at length on numerous occasions on our cruise, he is a most respectful and diligent person and is a "listener" and proactive..

I can't imagine him saying that either...I am sure the comment was taken out of context.

 

 

I wish I lived on the east coast right now. I would take it upon myself to take one for the team and book the Dawn immediately :) just so I could report back

Thank you for your perspective, Tammy. I was beginning to think the Dawn and Hugo had been replaced with their evil twins. :rolleyes: Who knows what cruising in and out of the Bermuda triangle can do! :D It sounds like the OP didn't know how to find the non-smoking side of the pool deck, among other things. ;)

I read Hugo's comment to be a reference to New Yorkers being aggressive, loud, overbearing [insert preferred stereotype about New Yorkers here] rather than a statement that New Yorkers smoke in disproportionate numbers. The latter has no basis and the former, while possibly untrue, is at least a prevailing stereotype of New Yorkers, often perpetuated by NYers themselves.

 

I read the OPs post as s/he asking the HD why smoking rules aren't enforced and HD responding that his staff is too nice to stand up to NYers. Your mileage may vary.

I agree - I read it the same way, Ralph, which is why I am certain Hugo didn't say it. He wouldn't disparage an entire demographic like that - especially his guests!!! :eek:

On NCL, smoking IS only on the Port side~ Not near kids pools, food venues, etc. No indoor smoking either. Not in MDR or any other restaurant, most bars now smoke free.

What else do people want. They don't like smoke, stay off our smoking ships and find ONE that is totally smoke free. Stop complaining please. It's your choice to cruise and YOU pick the ship w/ full knowledge of the smoking policy, so.please, cool it!!

 

Not even Holland America is smoke free.

It is you who are wrong. The OP clearly stated the issue was on the Promenade Deck. Smoking is allowed on both sides of the promenade deck and there are signs indicating this. So be carefully who and what you attack when you don't know the policy.

Actually Mooder, I believe the OP was discussing the smoking on the Promenade Deck to b ethe main point. I was on this cruise and found smoking on the promenade a minor inconveinence. Not a huge deal but definitely a negative with those who cannot tolerate cigarette smoke as well as I. I did see an NCL employee move a smoker from the starboard side of the pool for lighting up. So I did witness the enforcement of the smoking policy.

 

These discussions get out of hand when others misrepresent the views of the OP. They were slightly incorrect mentioning "all decks" so your point is taken.

 

PROOF FROM THE OP:

 

This was my 12th cruise and third NCL cruise but I will not sail on NCL again. I am sure I fall out of the targetted demographic to be fair. I booked this cruise at the last minute and for a very low price so my expectatons were set failry low.

 

 

 

The pros:

 

Easy embarkation in NY- on the ship by noon.

 

Booked inside cabin- cabin a bit small but bathroom larger than most and bed was comfy and stewards were great- always greeted us by name- provided bathrobes promptly and kept the cabin stocked with ice and fresh towels.

 

 

 

The wait staff in the restuarants were very good.

 

 

 

Bermuda is beautiful- incredibly beautiful empty beaches- just what we were looking for.

 

 

 

The cons

 

 

 

And this is the deal breaker for me-- Smoking everywhere on deck was a huge problem. It was not possible to walk or sit on the promenade deck without breathing smoke no matter what time of day or night. Same in all outside space.....

I must also chime in with the comment regarding the pub crawl on this sailing. Yes I was involved and I am one of the guilty parties. The pub crawl did make two stops in the pool area one at the Bimini Bar and the other was Top Siders. The event that took place at top siders was a little less than mature and diffently wasn't meant for young ears or eyes. It was hilarious however and really added to the fun atmosphere. I loved it but then again I can see why some people would be put off.

We were also on the Dawn 6/6 - 6/13 and did not see that much smoking and I think we would have noticed it since my husband and I are both x-smokers for the last 4 years(but we also do not bash anyone for smoking) . This was our 4th NCL cruise and I can't remember one of them that whereever you went there were people smoking. I don't even think the casino was that bad. I agree with the op that it is no reason not to cruise with NCL again, sometimes you have to just live with things to have a good time. Can't wait to book my next cruise with them

Actually the kids pool is all the way aft, not anywhere near the main pool.
