waldeneffect Posted June 23, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 23, 2010 We're going to be visiting Calica as part of our second ever cruise this December --- we're very excited. :-) I've read about Coba, and would really like to make our own excursion to the ruins rather than taking part in any tour. But I'm a bit stuck --- there are so many transportation options! I've read that we could rent a car or jeep at the pier. Have people felt safe renting a car in Mexico? Is there a lot more we need to know than the sticker price? Is the drive scary? (My husband would be driving, and he's a very competent city driver...in the U.S.) Alternatively, it seems like we could try to talk a taxi driver into giving us an all day rate, but that could be quite pricey. Our goal is to spend a few hours at Coba exploring on our own, so we'd have to pay the taxi driver to sit around. It might still be cheaper than a tour, but I'm not sure. Anyone tried renting a taxi for all day from Calica? What was the price? I've read we could take a bus very cheaply to Tulum, then a taxi from Tulum to Coba. I'd rather not spend time waiting around for a bus if there's another option, since we have such a limited time there. What do you all think is the best option for transportation? Sobrien Posted November 24, 2010 #2 Share Posted November 24, 2010 Have you found an answer yet? I have the same question! We will arrive in Calica on Dec 1st. We plan on doing a private tour and will have 3 "extra spots to fill". Let me know!
Smeegle Posted December 20, 2010 #3 Share Posted December 20, 2010 We have rented vehicles several times in Calica and have never felt unsafe. We never went off the beaten path though. Just use common sense.
