I am in the same boat you are! I have never been to Ft Lauderdale and am cruising from here in November. Go to the departure board, east coast departures then Florida departures. Their our alot of discussions on hotels there and lots of reviews.

Hope this helps!

We stayed at the Hampton Inn but I would not recommend it. When we were driving around we passed the Embassy Suites and it was a beautiful hotel within walking distance to some nice restaurants and shopping. Many people on our cruise stayed there and highly recommended it.

It would depend on which cruise line you are leaving on. Princess is on the North side and the rest are more South. For our Princess cruise we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Convention Center which is only a few blocks from the terminal. I wouldn't recommend walking from there but it is a short taxi ride. If you are a day early you would have many choices for eating from this hotel by taking the water taxi, which is three blocks East of the hotel and there are several restaraunts within walking distance. There is an Einsteins Bagel shop accross the street if the HI X breakfast doesn't suit you. This hotel was very accommodating to us. I would stay there again. http://www.hieftlauderdale.com/dining/

I'll second the recommendation of the Embassy Suites on 17th street. It has a very nice restaurant and complimentary cooked to order breakfast. Shuttle to the port is $7 pp.

Also there's a shopping center across the street with several restaurants - Harbor Shoppes.

We've stayed a half dozen times at the Sleep Inn in Dania -- it's on 5th. They pick you up at the airport and drop you at the cruise port! The only transportation cost you'd have then is the return (assuming you're not staying another night or two) from the ship back to the airport. They're clean, nice, about 8-9 years old -- good breakfast.
