Sydney, ns - tender

Recommended Posts

We are on Crown Princess due to visit Sydney NS on Oct 1 and our itinerary shows we are tendering. With the deep water harbor and dock options, I'm assuming that we are tendering due to many other ships calling on Sydney the same day we are. Does anyone know where the tender will drop us off? We are planning to rent a car to visit Fortress of Louisbourg as downtown Sydney doesn't seem to offer much. We also hope to find some great lobster/chowder as well. Any suggestions on rental cars and restaurants?

Thanks

Pam

Budget car rental, will pickup at the pier if called a day in advance. Their number in Sydney is 902-564-2611

This has good, general info about Sydney. There is a contact link to ask questions about a restaurant.

I just read on another post about Sydney that the Fortress of Louisbourg will not open until Oct. 15 and the people won't be dressed up.

My understanding from what I read on their website is that the people at the Fortress won't be dressed up after the 15th of October and the 2 restaurants close after Sept 30th. They are closed from Nov 1 - May 15. Here is the link to their website.

You can use Budget, Discount or Enterprise for car rentals. The Fortress will not be as "alive" that time of year and remember to bring some warm clothes, weather in Sydney can be warm and sunny and you'll freeze in Louisbourg.

There are a few nice restaurants in Louisbourg, I've heard some good things about the lobster kettle but I haven't tried it personally! http://www.lobsterkettle.com/

Thanks for the info especially about the weather. I think we'll keep a fleece in the car just in case! We have reserved a car with Budget. We had looked at Lobster Kettle website and thought that was the place for us.

I live just outside Sydney so if there's anything else you need to know just ask!

Thanks! With us being in Sydney from 8-5, is it reasonable for us to do the Fortress first (before the tour groups get there), enjoy an early lunch and then head over to Baddeck. We plan to be off the ship with the first tender and get the car as soon as we arrive at the dock. Do you have any thoughts/suggestions for Baddeck - the town seemed interesting even if we don't get to the A.G. Bell Museum.

I honestly think you'd be pushing your luck to do both. If all goes well you could be in Louisbourg at opening which is 9:30, then wait and get the bus to the fortress. It's quite a large restoration so you will need at least a couple of hours to really see everything. The trip from Louisbourg to Baddeck shows on google maps as being 1 hour 40 minutes so it becomes pretty impossible.

My suggestion for Baddeck (if weather co-operates) is a sailing tour on the Amoeba, we've done it a few times and you see some wonderful scenery. Here's a link.... http://www.amoebasailingtours.com/about.html

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Baddeck sounds like a great option assuming the weather is good. Glad we decided to rent a car and have flexibility. Restaurants suggestions there? My DH has a rule-lobster, chowder and/or mussels each day for lunch!

There is a little cafe at the Inverary Inn that had some great food, probably my favorite Spinach Salad and I've heard the mussles are good (I personally don't like them). I don't know when they close for the season though. There is also a little place called Cedar House which is just before the Seal Island bridge on your way to Baddeck that is supposed to have really good chowder and great homemade baked goods!

Thanks! In the meantime, my DH has decided if he has to make a choice, the Fortress sounds like a must see so I guess we'll head there and then to Lobster Kettle or head back to Sydney if you have any restaurant recommendations in town. In the afternoon, we'll wander around the shops in town.

p.s. if you ever come to Connecticut, let me know - I know lots of hidden gems!:)

Hi Merlotchampagne (great name!). I am glad you are coming on October 1.

I agree that Louisbourg is a 'must see', but not so much after Oct. 15. Having people there in costume acting out the roles of various actual people and busy going about their daily activities really brings it alive. One highlight is eating meals in restaurants as they would have been in 1744.

For those coming after Oct. 15: after seeing Nova Scotia, I know you will want to come back for a land trip so you could leave Louisbourg until then.

Thanks! I don't think you'll be disappointed with Louisbourg. In town if you're looking for a little on the nicer side there is Trio which is the restaurant in the Cambride Suites Hotel just a five minute walk down the street from the port. http://www.cambridgesuitessydney.com/dining_lunch.asp
