sachcan9 Posted July 6, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 6, 2010 I have heard lately that there are rumblings about Roman government officials opening up the recently renovated Colosseum underground to the public. Last I heard was that it would be available late August or early September. Anyone have any more information or details on this?

caribbeansun Posted July 10, 2010 #3 Share Posted July 10, 2010 We will be in Rome this fall and have private tours with an individual that does a fair bit of writing and consultation re. underground sites in Rome as I was requesting this be added to our agenda. Her reply was as follows: "Hi, the underground areas are not open yet and in classic italian style no official date to open them has been announced. That story was picked up by the AP based on a speech given by a member of the Rome Archaeology Superintendent's office who said the site would probably open in June. Not so. I'm actually writing a piece on the opening for the NYT but the story is on hold until an official opening date is announced." So - I take it this is a "don't hold your breath" kind of affair.
