We (group of 4) will be in Rome for 1 day shore excursion which we are planning to do on our own.The Vatican museum will be closed on the day that we are there are there any other tickets we are best off purchasing in advance for any of the sights to avoid lines. thank you.

There are only two other places where there is either often a line (the Colosseum) or which require a reservation (the Borgehese Museum/Gallery).

 

The Colosseum issue can be avoided by purchasing your tickets at the Palatine office, which never seems to have a line.

 

The Borghese reservation can be made in advance over the internet or by telephone, but most first time, one-day visitors don't make it to the Borghese.

It really is amazing. We were at the Coliseum last week and the line to purchase a ticket was hours long. Yet, at the ticket booth literally 500 feet up the street from the entrance there was no one in line when we purchased our tickets. Then, you take the short walk over the the Coliseum entrance and enter the line for people "with tickets." You walk right past all the people in waiting in the long line and go right into the venue. It really is amazing that more people aren't aware of this ... but they're not!!
