Renting a car in Halifax, should we pre-book or wait till we get there?

Recommended Posts

We're decided to rent a car in Halifax, drive to Peggy's Cove, drive up the coast to Upper Tantallon and then over to Halifax. Once back in Halifax I'd like to stop and see the Public Gardens.

Is it best to pre-book a rental car or wait until we get to port?

Thanks!

My vote would be to book ahead. Was just reading an article where PEI and Newfoundland are experiencing rental car shortages, wouldn't surprise me if we are here too, especially on days when cruise ships are in.

Definitely prebook a car. I booked mine 4 months ago for my aug 7th cruise. Some people on my roll call can't rent a car because there are no more cars available for the day we're in port. The prices also go up the closer you are to the date of rental.

Looks like I'm going to have to get on this ASAP!!!

National & Alamo are both SOLD OUT!!! At least on-line, I'm going to try and call when I get home. Looks like Enterprise is my next option. Is the Scotia Square location the one closest to pier 22?

Hmmm maybe I should rent out my Yaris for the day when cruise ships are in LOL. But then there's the whole insurance thing, never mind. Yes the Scotia Square location is the closest to the pier, though not within a short walking distance. They will pick you up and drop you off at the cruise dock. Good luck.

I booked Enterprise tonight, they didn't have much of a selection, BUT I'm glad we were able to get a car.

I am going to keep checking back on National & Alamo just to see if something becomes available. It would be nice to be able to walk across the street and pick up our car.

I just realized I could rent a car for the day for the cost of a half-day excursion for one of us...

Since my business rentals are with Hertz I'm reserving with them - but Hertz is up at the Marriott - looks like maybe a half mile away from the pier, closer to the Citadel. Any problems with that??

No problem, it's about a 25 minute walk along the waterfront if they don't pick you up. That's of course if you don't get distracted by the many things along the way. Or it's a 5 minute cab ride.
