American $$ at Monastery, Drinks, Fort, etc - Independent Tour?

We will probably hire a guide or taxi once the three of us arrive to Cartagena. Just wondering if the dollar is accepted at all tourist sites. Also, per someone elses suggestion, we have emailed a JJ to see if he can take us around the city. Anyone else used JJ?

We toured Cartegena on a private tour on our Panama Canal cruise in April. The vendors readily accept US$$. DW bought a table cloth with US$$ and I got a few beers as well from a vendor. No problem.
