cbb Posted August 8, 2010 #1 Share Posted August 8, 2010 We are on the "Wonders of the Ancients" cruise and wonder if anyone has taken the "El Alamein" shorex? We are hugely interested in WWII and this tour has the potential to be amazing. Anyone know anything about this or have heard from others? As always....my sincere thanks. As always....my sincere thanks. c, I would strongly urge you to arrange for a private tour of El Alamein. On our cruise this tour was cancelled due to lack of interest (6 people or so) as most people wanted to go to the pyramids. There were some WWII veterans that took this cruise largely for that reason and there was a major uprising over this. Oceania eventually arranged a "private" tour for them, but I wouldn't count on that happening every time. Our tour was cancelled as well and they didn't accommodate us (I guess we only caused a minor uprising over this), even though it would have been much simpler to accommodate us - but that's another story. cbb Posted August 8, 2010 Author #3 Share Posted August 8, 2010 Paul, I had supposed that we would be able to do the pyramids the next day out of Port Said; I know it is a long day but that's ok. I really was hoping that we could see El Alamein. How many do you think must sign up for O to go ahead with the tour? What did you do instead? Thanks for the reply. c
Paulchili Posted August 8, 2010 #4 Share Posted August 8, 2010 c, I have no idea what the minimum required number is for this tour to operate (also have no idea how many people would be interested on your cruise). IIRC, Bruin Steve (among others) had a good private guide in Egypt and perhaps it would be worth your while to contact him/her. Also, others may join you on the roll call to share the cost. Do a search on Ports of Call. Unfortunately for us it was a wasted day. We had scheduled a ship's tour in Alexandria for the second day (we've been to the pyramids a couple of times) and thus had the first day "free". We walked around Alexandria where 4 hours is quite sufficient (IMO). We were not happy campers as our "dilemma" could have been solved very easily (I won't go there - water under the bridge). cbb Posted August 8, 2010 Author #5 Share Posted August 8, 2010 Paul, I had read Bruin Steve's trip report but thought he had not gone to El Alamein so I posted hoping someone had indeed gone on O's shorex. I will now go to other cruise line threads and also begin to research what is at EA. Thanks for the tips! c
bluemarlin65 Posted August 8, 2010 #6 Share Posted August 8, 2010 We asked the excursion department what was on the tour and found it was mainly a tour of the Italian, British & German cemetaries and a small museum. If you call or email them they will fax or email you a detailed plan. Steve
cbb Posted August 8, 2010 Author #7 Share Posted August 8, 2010 Hey Steve, Did you get to go on the tour? Through my research I have found the name of Ramses tours in Egypt that will do tours to EA. The company seems to be very highly rec'd and I read their itinerary so now I have some idea. As an American woman I do appreciate the idea of safety in numbers and I'm thinking shorex here! My hairdresser, who has been to Cairo, even told me "Girl, do NOT go anywhere without being in a large group" so perhaps we'll know nearer cruise time about the possibility of EA. Thanks for the reply!
ClaudiaF Posted August 8, 2010 #8 Share Posted August 8, 2010 Cbb..you wrote in part.... "Girl, do NOT go anywhere without being in a large group" ... Right! We took a ship tour in Cairo and their were armed police on the buses and we also had police escorts ( in front of the bus and behind and also military) going from one place to another. Also, the armed guards escorted us in to many places...so definetly you need a large group and protection.
cbb Posted August 9, 2010 Author #9 Share Posted August 9, 2010 Claudia, So once again I have to tell the 3rd most important guy in my life that he is right....sigh. Yeah, I kinda figured that I shouldn't be looking at independent tours at EA. Oh well, if we get to see it, awesome; if we don't, that's ok too. Thanks for the confirmation!
