Ideas for Salerno on your own.

My wife and I are in Salerno 0700 - 1900 on the 14 th Oct with X Constellation. I realise that most of the pax will do Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri etc. We would appreciate any alternative ideas.

We have spent 3 weeks in the past in Sorrento, and also visited as a cruise stop, so we have done all the attractions in the Bay of Naples area. Thanks for any suggestions.

Paestum is wonderful, and if it is your sole destination for the day, it can be a lovely and relaxed trip. The museum at the ruins is particularly good; you can read about it here: http://www.culturacampania.rai.it/site/en-GB/Cultural_Heritage/Museums/Scheda/paestum_museo_archeologico.html?

There are public transit options, if you are interested.

With a car and driver, you could also stop at one of the famous buffalo mozzarella farms in the area. Tenuta Vannulo (http://www.vannulo.it/eng/home.html) is quite close by and you can see many facets of their work, including the buffalo. If it's a warm day, their fresh frozen yogurt will hit the spot. You have to get there in the morning, however, if you want to sample the mozzarella. When they sell out, that's it for the day. When we were there on a late morning in May, there were almost out.

thank you for the info!

I was just reading about Paestum and how to get there by train from Salerno.

Its only a 30 minutes train drive from Salerno.

The Mozzarella farms would be very interesting:)

But if we were to turn left instead of right in Salerno; what would you suggest??.........Vietri Sul Mare....Cava de Tirreni...Cetara..???

Vietri sul Mare is interesting for the ceramics museum and factory, and I guess for shopping (not my strong suit, so I'm not really informed about it), but I'm not sure what else. We stayed there overnight a couple of years ago on a driving trip from Calabria up to Rome, but really only visited the ceramics place.

Heading west from Salerno, beyond Vietri Sul Mare, my personal choice would be Ravello.

Thanks again for your help, Euro. I think, after reading some great reviews, that we will be going to Paestum by train. It seems that October will be a great time to visit, as it should be a quiet time.
