Live...Live....Live from the Oasis 8/28/10 with Merion Mom

Forgot to say we moved before the new 17 and 4 interchange was done. It was always a nightmare! Gridlock city!

Airmont Diner! And Sutters Mill across Airmont Road with the best chili and burgers, now much bigger then before since it bought the place next door and conjoined them.

Getting back to cruising, we have gone out of Bayonne now for years on the Explorer (3x) and the Connie (1x), soon to be 4x in Dec on the Ex. All you have is Galveston, but how far is that for you?

Galveston is approx. 5 1/2 hours or so from where we live in Plano. Straight drive down 45. Believe it or not from our house we only take 4 turns and we're at the port! We sailed out of NY 3 times, twice to Bermuda on Celebrity Horizon, a relic by today's standards but a beautiful ship for its time and once on the Carnival Triumph to Canada. We sailed twice out of Galveston on the Rhapsody which we LOVED. So sad that it left us. Our upcoming cruise in Jan is again out of Galveston on the Voyager and another Western Carib. itinerary. We sailed out of FL (I forget which port) on the Majesty of The Seas, another relic. I am so used to smaller ships not sure how I would react in a mega ship like Oasis but I would sure love to give it a try. Western Caribbean itinerary is getting boring but so wonderful driving down instead of flying. Everyone here is sorry the new Houston port never came to be after so much hype.

Quick question about my old home town. Is Pasta Cucina still near the Diner? We loved it in New City.

Yes, still there.

We just ate at the Airmont Diner after a Knights of Phythias meeting tonight.

This place is near the golf course where ex-Giant Lawrence Taylor loves to play; he hangs out here. And it is near the motel where LT was arrested after playing around with the 15 year old.

Ah, sweet memories.

As transplanted Texans, which NFL team do you root for?

You know that the Celebrity Silhouette is coming to Bayonne, don't you?

Carol - Will you be posting pictures of the Oasis, here? I know you're on the Mariner...another beautiful ship...just wondering after the Mariner sailing, will you be posting pictures of Oasis?

ABSOLUTELY.

I will try to do some tomorrow using my roommate Susan's iMac, but I can only post what I have already uploaded. Newer pics are locked on my camera's memory card until I get home, since I don't have the connector cable with me - that was Lorna's.

shhhhhhhhhh I was never and am not a football fan. I hope I won't be booted out of Texas! My DH and our 23 year old daughter are die hard Giants fan. Let's not let that get out either. Here when the Cowboys play, especially a home game, the streets are empty. You can lie down in the middle of the street and not get run over. Crazy!

Carol, you are the only one who post cruise threads that go on and on even when you are on ANOTHER cruise. Yup I saw the new thread. :D Can't wait to see those pictures and read about your "horror" experiences. Glad they're in the past.

Does the iMac have an SD card slot?

I believe the new versions just launched a month or so ago do.

Then all Carol has to do is plug the card in to the slot. I know Windows can handle a direct read from a card so the Mac's OS should be able to do it.

Unless she has an older model.

I didn't realize that my netbook had an SD slot until this thread, it is well hidden.

Just checked on Apple...On the new iMACS it is below the CD/DVD drive on the right side.

I have a Sony with a different kind of memory card - the memory stick.

How about that one? Will it work?

Frequently, Sony products use their own standard attachments and parts. The memory stick is not compatible with the SD card, which is close to being standard.

I would gently see if the slot in the computer will accept the memory stick. Some of these slots are universal and have multiple contact grids. Most don't.

Ok, here's a funny story, Kenny.

So, I had glanced at the Cruise Compass to find out the Schooner Bar player's name. I had only a vague recollection. So, when Lorna asked what his name was, as we sat in our chairs listening, I said, "He looks REALLY familiar. I think that he was on the Serenade when I went to Alaska in June (2009)."

So as I searched in my bag for the CC for the answer, I said, "His name is Ed something. Ed Manchego............no, that's a cheese...........but it's something like that."

And Lorna suggested, "Ed Mandingo?"

We laughed a while at that, but the actual answer is Ed Manego.

Maybe you had to be there. ;)

(and we don't really like him; he doesn't really encourage singing along; he just likes to sing by himself. Blech)

That is funny. Glad you had a good time, but not that good of a time.

hanging out for some Oasis pics

And here we go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our lovely hotel room at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Airport:

One night pre-cruise. We had to make a trip to Wally World because Lorna left her camera at home. I fell in love with a tiny little EIGHTY GIGABYTE movie camera, and bought it. PLEASE do not tell my children that I bought something at WalMart!!!!!!

First lunch - Park Café - salad and the famous roast beef sandwich. Good with a schmear of mustard! I actually liked the mango flavored water.

Empty when we got there; teeming with passengers by the time we left.

Inside the On Air Club: This is where we chose to wait a while after we ate and before we could access our cabin, a D1 - #10200. Our carryons were HEAVY because there was stuff we just didn't want to turn over to the porters.

I LOVE MY SONY CAMERA. It's a DSC-H20 that I bought last year for my cruise to Alaska. It has 10x zoom, and I love the quality of the pictures!

These are shots of their TV screens.

So, we went to check out our table in the main dining room, Deck 3. Here's the entrance area. Please note the antibacterial squirt station.

This is what you see when you enter: It's a simply beautiful mural, with crystalline chandeliers. It has an amazingly luxurious ambience.

This is our assigned table, #223. We had requested a large table, and were given a 4-top. We went in the first night and explained to the couple that we wouldn't be there for dinner that night or the next. In fact, we never ended up eating there.

See how close together the tables are?

We ate one meal in the MDR - second formal night. They let us eat on Deck 5, which is WHOLLY given over to MTD, unlike other ships where it's a partial deck devoted to MTD.

Time to go check out the Concierge Lounge! Our SeaPass cards were encoded for the CL, so we didn't need a separate card. When you insert your card into the slot, the door swings open automatically. There is a button inside that lets you out the same way.

The views of the Boardwalk, the Aquatheatre and the zipline from the three story window wall of the CL were amazing.

The CL has two levels. Upstairs is the dining room for the Chef's Table. It was full every night, and the sounds of enjoyment rang out and traveled downstairs.

Here is the table and a very clever chandelier/lighting fixture.
