Hurricane - Explorer headed into Portland early

Two cruise ships will be spending some extra time in the Portland, Maine, harbor so they won’t be at sea when Hurricane Earl passes by.

 

WMTW-TV says The Independence with about 100 passengers on board had been scheduled to arrive in Portland Friday, but chose to make for port early to avoid the hurricane.

 

The other ship, the Explorer of the Seas with about 3,000 passengers, is due to arrive in Portland Friday afternoon. it had been scheduled to arrive in Portland Saturday.

Nicole Clegg, a spokeswoman for the city of Portland, says Portland harbor is sheltered and a safe place for vessels to ride out the storm.

 

Forecasters say Earl will pass through the area late Friday.
