Raison Posted September 8, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 8, 2010 Are there any interesting things to see/do near the airport in Melbourne? Or should I plan to spend my time in the city area?
stanc61 Posted September 9, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 9, 2010 Absolutely nothing near the airport which is about a 20 minute cab ride from city depending on the time of day. More to see and do in Melbourne CBD itself.
kuldalai Posted September 9, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 9, 2010 Melbourne's Tullamarine International Airport is approximately 30 minutes North West of the City Centre by freeway . Your flight will discharge you out front of the terminal at ground level . From International Arrivals turn left and look for SKYBUS Ticket Office on the kerbside for Express Coach to the City (to Southern Cross Station coach terminal on Spencer Street.) Return to the Airport same way from Southern Cross station coach terminal by the SKYBUS . (Skybus runs every 10 minutes express each way.) Things to do see in the City - Federation Square (Flinders St), NGV Australian Gallery at Federation Square, NGV International Collection at National Gallery on St Kilda Rd a 5 minute walk from Flinders St. Shopping in Bourke Street . When you return to the Airport take the escalator upstairs to the First Floor for all Departures. Use the SKYBUS much cheaper than taxis, buy a RETURN ticket and you save more . SmartTraveller Posted September 9, 2010 #4 Share Posted September 9, 2010 Tullamarine is largely an industrial area so very boring/dreary and nothing to do outside of the aiport itself.. As others have posted you can catch the Skybus to the CBD. However, if you dont want go into the city, you could catch a cab to the the DFO (Direct Factory Outlets) near Essendon airport (about 1/3 of the way into the city) and shop 'til you drop. Personally, I would take the Skybus and have a wander around the city. Melbourne is known for its lovely arcades and fascinating laneways, great shopping and food
room010 Posted September 9, 2010 #5 Share Posted September 9, 2010 Like most international airports, Tullamarine doesn't feature in any tourist books as a "must see" :D As others have said, catch a 20 min Skybus trip into the city centre.
