Only a few hours in New Orleans

We'll be disembarking the Carnival Triumph on a Saturday morning and our flight doesn't leave until 3:15 pm. We are thinking of sending our luggage to the airport with Advance Check-In (can anyone comment on them?) and then walking around the French Quarter.

 

Hubby and I have never been to NO. Any recommendations on what to do? Places to eat? Local drink/food specialties?

 

Also, any advice on when we should leave to get to the airport especially since we have to retrieve our luggage from Advance Check-In?
