Please explain "Off"

We were just on the Fantasy this past week and I met a great guy from Lancaster, SC who knew Craps. So I joined up with him and had a great time at the table.

On our last night of the cruise, we were on a good run when a young lady came up to the table with her hubby or boy friend and stood next to D. She was chatting away and said something I did not catch, but D immediately called "Take me Off" and stepped back from the table. That roll was a number, and then the next one was 7. He stepped back looking disgusted and I asked oif she had said something, and he said yes. I don't know what she said but it set him off.

I need to ask what the "Off the table" is and how is it played?

Thanks

"Off" means that for those bets where it is permitted, consider temporarily that the bet was not made (another terminology is "no action on this bet"). That is, if it would win, it is not paid, and if it would lose, it will not be taken by the casino. In either case, you get your money back. If the bet wouldn't be settled, you may call it back ON or leave it OFF as you choose.

Not all bets may be called off. The ones which may are the place bets, buy bets, lay bets, odds on the pas/don't pass/come/don't come, and hardways (probably BIG6/8 for anyone foolish enough to make such a sucker bet). It's not applicable to any of the one-roll bets of course (just don't make the bet). I can't say about the new specialty bets like Small Tall and All, since I've never been at a casino offering them.

The pass/come bet may not be set off. The don'ts may be taken down but once they are, that's a permanent decision - they can not be set to "on" again.

Thanks for the response Andy.

If I had known this one sooner. I would have saved myself some grief.

On this cruise I became superstitious in some ways. I was sucking down bottle of water and it seemed the every time I stop to order a bottle of water from a server, I or the player would immediately roll a 7. I did this for the entire cruise.

It got to the point that I was going to die of thirst before I would stop to order anything.

Now, that I know about the "Off" call I can back out long enough to place an order, then go back to the action. And hopefully, keep going.

I still wonder what that girl said to set D off, but she did make amends by having a good winning run when it came time for her to roll, and she made some folks very happy.

I have never understood why superstitions are far more common at the craps table than at the blackjack table for example. I personally am free of the urge.

On the other hand, last cruise, DW was having a "golden" night at blackjack - every decision turned in her favor, and of course the cards were turning lucky. After a while she noticed that every time the waitress came near the table she won a big hand. She mentioned it to the waitress, and it became a "thing" between them. Coincidence? Probably, but they kept it going and you can't argue with success, I suppose.

Good luck and shalom from Tel Aviv.

Most likely what the young lady said was something to do with the number 7. The only way to combay that number is to have the offending party say "Neves" (7 backwards) while hopping on their left foot in a counter-clockwise rotation.

Any bet that you (not the dice) chose where it went can be called off or on at any time. Place bets, hardways and odds on both come bets and the pass line can be called working on the come out roll if you wish. Odss on come bets can be called off, pass line odds must be picked up if you do not want them to "have action".
