Tournament Question

Ok so I have a really dumb question. I don't gamble much but I do enjoy playing the slots. So if there's a tournament of any kind, let's say poker for my husband or a slots tournament for me and the buy in is 20$ for example, do you have to pay 20$ just to join the tournament plus then you have to put your own money in or is the 20$ to play and whoever wins the most money wins? I really don't understand. Sorry if this is a really stupid question.

Not a stupid question. The buy in of $20 is all that it would cost you - the machines are set up for tournaments and do not require that cash be inserted.
