Spirit cruise to Cabo- itinerary

I'm looking at the Spirit Cruise to Cabo out of San Diego. It's a 5 night cruise. 2 sea days and 2 days in Cabo. I'm confused with the overnight in Cabo, though.

http://www.carnival.com/Itinerary.aspx?embkCode=SDG&itinCode=SDT&durDays=5&shipCode=SP&subRegionCode=MB&sailDate=1/9/2011&sailingID=57196

The itinerary says we arrive in Cabo on Jan 11th at 8:00a and leave at 5:00p. Then in Cabo Jan 12th from 7:00a - 3:00p. Does the ship really leave Cabo from 5:00p to 7:00a? If so, why? Just seem a little odd to sail around at night, then come right back.

I see that about a half dozen other people have viewed this post with no answers and unfortunately, I have none either. If the ship truly leaves Cabo on one evening and returns the next morning, perhaps it's some sort of Mexican port law prohibiting ships from anchoring overnight (Cabo is a tendering port).

Yes. The ship leaves Cabo. A lot of people are confused about this.

Cabo is a tender port. The ship leaves the 1st day circles for the evening then anchors the 2nd day. Sometimes the water is too choppy for the tenders to pick up passengers, so the ship just makes this into a sea day. It doesn't happen very often, but it does happen.

There are a few reasons for leaving the port.

1. The ship goes out to sea so it can open the casino and the stores.

2. The ship might not be allowed to stay in port overnight.

No. You can't stay in town overnight. You need to be on the ship just in case the ship can't anchor the 2nd day.

Both very reasonable reasons, but I guess the 5:00p just seems SO early. I'm my no means a "late night party person" :o but for the ship to leave at 5:00p, that really cuts the day short. Would be nice if it was further into the evening so we could enjoy a little Cabo nightlife.

But it doesn't bother me enough to not book the cruise. :D LOL

days are shorter in the winter months they do not tender after dark......

The reason for this is because overnight visits to Mexico require a passport. A large percentage of passengers don't travel with a passport so the ship must leave port and return again the next day.

Acapulco is not a tender port....

What has being a tender port or not have to do with requiring a passport to stay overnight in Mexico? If anything seems like it would be the opposite and ship docked at the land would need a passport over a ship anchored off shore.

Doesn't really make sense to me, but whatever. The cruise looks great. LOL :D

Maybe I misunderstood? You said you stayed pass midnight in Acapulco........not overnight.......so I thought we were still talking about night time and since they don't tender at night I thought you were confused.....my mistake.

As far as the passport that made no sense to me at all .......

I think the comment was made in reference to the overnight stay requiring a passport, not the tendering after dark.

That's how I read it, too.

AdGuyMG said the reason why the cruise I was looking at wouldn't be spending the night in Cabo was because "overnight visits to Mexico require a passport."

I was confused because on my last cruise, we spent the night* in Acapulco and didn't need to show our passports, other than when we embarked in San Diego.

My guess would be it's because they want the casino open in the evening and the ship would have to be sailing for that. 5:00p seemed awfully early for the ship to be leaving if the sole purpose was to have the casinos open, but I didn't realize the tenders didn't operate after dark. So this reasoning makes much more sense to me, rather than something having to do with passports.

(*spending the night meaning- arriving one day and leaving the following day. We arrived on the 6th and left on the 7th. If that's not spending the night, I'm not sure how else it would be defined.)

I believe spending the night would consitute 24 hours.......You know like booking a hotel room for one night........you just left port after midnight.......

Okay, I don't think that's true that you need a passport to stay overnight in Mexico. You would need it if returning to the US by land or air. So, what if you got off in Cabo the first night, and then you "missed the ship" like I dunno, call them and say that you rented a jeep and the tires got stuck in the sand. Would they just let you back on the next day? or would it be a gigantic mess? I bet alot of people would try and stay the night in Cabo, and yes taking a risk that the ship leaves you there because they can't tender the next day. Travel is about adventure people!

And let's just say that somehow you missed the ship. Then what?

For me, that wouldn't be a problem, and I do have a second bedroom in my condo for anyone else that it might happen to.

Hey Senora! Welcome back! Hope everything went bueno:D

When you figure out how many pesos you will be charging for rent, along with all the info.....shoot me an e-mail:) I would love to see photos it sounds wonderful!

Back on track.......if you happen to miss the ship it would be just like any other port.....you would be responsible for catching up to the next port at your expense.....which would be Cabo:D Just hope the ship is there to meet you the next morning......

You got it Kurb. I'll do that. They were still in the middle of destruction when I was there, but closing went fine.

So, maybe I should offer up my condo to anyone that might miss the ship. I might make enough in rents just doing that.

I'm in the Marina if anyone is interested!:p

And I can't believe that I am doing the Cabo/Cabo itinerary for Thanksgiving 2011. How weird will that be.

Cabo is actually pretty quiet at night, except at the party zones, like Cabo Wabo, but it is really pretty too with the twinkling lights.
