Dearington Posted September 19, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 19, 2010 What is the best way to get from a hotel in central Rome to the cruise port in Civitavecchia? There will be two of us with one large pice of luggage and one carry-on per person. Thanks!
lespes Posted September 19, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 19, 2010 The least expensive way would be to take the train, about an hour and a quarter ride. It is then about 4 easy blocks from the train station in Citavecchia to the main port entrance. Depending on just where your hotel is and how heavy your luggage is you might simply take the metro to the train station or a taxi at either end. ClaudiaF Posted September 19, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 19, 2010 best way is to just hire a driver and have no stress..
majo7777 Posted September 20, 2010 #4 Share Posted September 20, 2010 The train to Civitavecchia from Termini Station is very easy and inexpensive...we have done it a couple of times (and vice versa). The only issue is that there are stairs at the station in Civitavecchia that one has to go down then up to go under the tracks (no elevator nor escalator). Not impossible with luggage but rather inconvenient.
wripro Posted September 20, 2010 #5 Share Posted September 20, 2010 I agree with ClaudiaF. It's a 90 minute drive so why not just sit back and enjoy without worrying about toting luggage through train stations, not to mention taxis to and from the stations. TERRIER1 Posted September 21, 2010 #6 Share Posted September 21, 2010 Try going on your roll call here at cruise critic and see if any fellow passengers are interested in sharing a private car service. We did this the last two trips and it worked out great.
JimandStan Posted September 21, 2010 #7 Share Posted September 21, 2010 What is the best way to get from a hotel in central Rome to the cruise port in Civitavecchia? There will be two of us with one large pice of luggage and one carry-on per person. Thanks! Katie Parla, a very fine American tour guiide, living in Rome, offers a most unique service, combining a tour and transportation to the port which would be our first choice for this trip. http://www.katieparla.com/ Katie picks you up at your hotel, tours Rome as time allows, and then provides color commentary as you drive to Civitavecchia. She will customize the narration according to your interests; you can discuss history, art, antiquities, wine or even the food of the region. This is a marvelous way to maximise your time in Italy if you're not the "sleep on the bus" type.

searanch queen Posted February 7, 2011 #10 Share Posted February 7, 2011 We have a private driver that cost 210 euros. Front of hotel to front of ship
crooser888 Posted February 7, 2011 #11 Share Posted February 7, 2011 Private driver at 210 euros (or more) is definite easier. However, if you go to the Italian train service site at http://www.trenitalia.com (service in English is available), you will see that the train takes about an hour for 9.50 euros/person in 2nd class, 12 euros on first class. No traffic on highways to worry about. When you get off, it's a ten minute walk to the port entrance and you wait for the free shuttle that will take you to your ship, as the piers are scattered all over. You should only manage this if you can walk up and down stairs, carry your own luggage, not travelling with small kids or with anyone who has mobility problems. Also, be careful on day of travel if it is a public holiday as train service can be reduced or strikes with these public services can also occur anytime. You should have a backup plan to take a cab which will cost about 200 euros as well. If you can get out of Rome first thing in the morning like before 9 am on the embarkation date, then go this route. Try to get together with other travellers on cc boards as we did and share the cost. Otherwise, save the train and the money for disembarkation if you are coming back through Rome. Little Rascal Posted February 8, 2011 #12 Share Posted February 8, 2011 I am planning on taking the train but I did find a driver on Tripadvisor.com called Rome Cabs for 150.00 Euro for two from downtown Rome to the port. They get great reviews.:)
