Someone overeating next to you won't transfer their excess calories into your body. I mean, let's be honest here.

THANK HEAVENS for that!

I get enough calories sneaking in on my own without help. :p

(I agree with you 100%. The anaology between the two addictions is a poor one)

I think the problem is that some of us don't think that cabins and/or balconies should be smoking areas when smokers and nonsmokers are all mixed in together. Smoking on the upper decks and in the casinos and lounges, I have no problem with. Allowing smoking in the cabins, and I do consider the balcony a part of the cabin, shows a lack of respect for the health and welfare of people that choose not to smoke. I know that smokers who smoke in their cabins do so because Carnival allows it and I think this all goes back to courtesy as someone mentioned upthread. Sure, it's allowed but is it courteous to others who may not smoke? IMO, this decision by Carnival puts profits before the health of ALL it's passengers. Smokers will not be negatively affected if no one is allowed to smoke in the cabin. I think we can all agree that the fresh air will do everyone good. Nonsmokers will be affected if smokers are given increasing areas to smoke.

not my logic at all. i feel non smokers have rights as smokers have rights. but one should not be favored over another. i don't think i should be allowed to smoke anywhere, but if i am in designated areas, why is it such a probelm?

i think carnival may be served well to find a solution that can accomodate both groups. there are to many that are radical one way or another, and it's not one way or another right now. i completely understand both sides and the need for a solution.

Because we had one chain smoker ruin the enjoyment of 3 families (2 cabins down wind, and one above). When one person can make 12 people leave their balconies... its just bad business for Carnival.

If Carnival considered it "bad business", I'm sure that they would've changed the policies a long time ago. As mentioned, people complain about every thing. We have to learn to suck it up sometimes if it isn't something conducive to what we're accustomed to and move on. If I had my way, rude and insensitive people wouldn't be allowed on the cruise ship EVER. As long as it's not a 24-hour smoke session to say that everyone's cruise was ruined is far-fetched.

I swear we're a nation of do-gooders...If someone around me smokes, I'll just leave the area if bothered, as I'm sure it's a temporary inconvenience. I forgot though, that people don't appreciate being inconvenienced in the least bit on "vacation."

I smoke. I don't smoke indoors. I don't smoke within 20 feet of public buildings. I don't smoke in areas that say no smoking.

On Carnival there are dedicated smoking areas that include the balcony of my stateroom. It's outside. As long as I'm following the rules, I fail to see why anyone would complain.

Yes, cigarette smoke is carried on a breeze, and keeps right on going.

Smokers should be more considerate, but lordy mercy, so should the non smokers. Coming up to me in a smoking section and coughing in my face will not make me put my cigarette out. Popping your head around the balcony divider and asking me nicely..... will.

Of the two, smoking in a cabin or smoking on a balcony I believe anyone would rather a smoker smoke on their balcony! The adjacent balcony might get a whiff of smoke but in most cases the ship is moving and the smoke is traveling out to sea. The amount of smoke experienced by the adjacent balcony can't be that much. I've been on my balcony before and the people next door smoked cigarettes. Not much got to me. Again, with the ship moving it's highly unlikely the amount encountered could ruin your cruise! The complaints about the balconies are exagerated.

@CigarD. Fully agree. I started to post the same thoughts about smoke on balconies, but my post was "lost".

Unfortunatly, there are some who cannot (or will not) tolerate any smell of smoke. For me, I'll continue to enjoy an occasional evening cigar either on my balcony or the cigar bar, maybe we'll enjoy a smoke on a cruise one evening.

I smoked for 30 years, the company I worked for started and strictly enforced a non-smoking policy (on company grounds) in order to contain health cost. Best thing they ever did for me because I stopped rather than lose my job. So I been on both sides of this, I will not infringe on a smokers right but I have no problem asking politely for a break if it is in a smoking area, I also have no problem insisting rudely if it is in a non-smoking area!

- I'm 100% sure the policy will be changed 10 years from now.

- I'm 50% sure the policy will be changed 5 years from now.

- And with repeat threads on CruiseCritic... we might see some action in the next 2 to 3 years (its worth a try)

As someone who has suffered from asthma since I was a child. I think change is good, and will do what I can, to be vocal about separating smoking and non smoking balconies and rooms.

I don't think so. Carnival knows that as other cruiselines regulate smoking more and more (no smoking in cabins, on balconies etc.) that they become the savior for the smoker.

It sure doesn't seem to be hurting them to have that reputation either, they made a fortune this past summer season according to articles I read.

Not so much the savior; rather the alternative for those who choose to smoke.

I tend to agree with you. HOWEVER, after living in Paris in the '80's, I would have sworn on my life that France would be the last place in the world which would ever enact anti-smoking ordinances. Wrong. You could have knocked me over with a feather...

That's very true...I was pretty much astounded by that, as well as France banning burqas.

I still don't think the world will be ready to put that big a limit on smoking in a mere 10 years. It would be nice, but I just don't see it.

Of course, this won't help with cigars and pipes...

but friends of mine use the e-cigarettes so that they can smoke anywhere they want to...and they love it....

they get to smoke anywhere and no one else is bothered.....a win-win situation....

I was thinking about investing in these. My concern is that folks may see me "smoking" and think it is the real deal. Have your friends had any negative experiences with the e-ciggys?

Since these are fairly new, every now and then, if they are smoking in a nonsmoking area.....a crew member will ask them about it. But no worries...as soon as they see it is an E Cig...it's all good!!

As they get more popular...then there will be less of this....

I can't believe that Carnival hasn't seen this as a great money making proposition. If they required E cigs inside and on balconies, then sold the E Cigs and cartridges ...even selling them WAY below retail...would make them a ton of money!!!

You'd think, I'm asking for them to stop all people from smoking on balconies or in their rooms.

I just see some kind of improvement coming in the future... like one side of the ship without balcony smokers, for the 75% of us who don't smoke.

When Disney World (the largest resort in the world by sheer numbers of visitors) made all their rooms non-smoking, I was surprised. Their argument was that they just don't get enough request any more for smoking rooms. Because even if one parent smokes, the rest of the family didn't want to stay in a stale smelling smoker's room.

I'm sure that you will get some negative reaction, I've had an unlit cigarette in my hand and had some woman start fake coughing and waving her arms. All you can do is laugh at their ridiculousness.

Depending on the cruise, I bet the number of smokers is not always only 25%.

And limiting access to aft cabins or middle cabins isn't going to go over big with either smokers or nonsmokers.

A couple of tips ...

1. Refer to it as a personal vaporizor.

2. Stick to models that don't look like a cigarette -- a blue or pink tip doesn't look like a glowing cherry.

3. If anyone questions you, push the "cherry" tip against your tongue and laugh. ;)

I am a non smokers who is bothered by smoke, but I am also a realist.

CCL does not draw the same customer as Disney (WDW or Disney cruises) or Celebrity, who are pretty smoke-strict. This is why I don't believe it will happen.

Oh I think it will change..and even sooner

already it has changed...look at the Splendor in California

NO smoking in disco, piano bar or around the pool

just on deck above the pool, sports bar, cigar bar and casino

Dream and Magic : spa cabins...

I think Carnival could convert more cabins on other ships to Non smoking/spa designated cabins and I bet they will

Dream and Magic ...no cigar bar

(actually I don't mind the cigar bar...I resent the piano bar and disco smoke however and I am vocal about it)

There have been changes and more restrictions..years ago you could smoke in the dining rooms

they cut that out

you could smoke in the lobby...they stopped that

and so on

each year there are more restrictions, more countries and more cities that jump on the cause of limiting and regulating where smokers can smoke

Other cruiselines have become more restrictive and Carnival will likely follow suit

as long as they give the smokers a few places to smoke they can still cruise

after all...years ago people smoked on planes

times change

maybe they should sell those "electronic" cigarettes on board

and let the smokers get their nicotine/oral and hand/mouth fix that way??

Hey I am honest about it too ....I don't have asthma or anything, I just don't like the smell, and it makes my eyes water, and annoys me

<grin>

I'm having a logical debate in a chat room, with a topic that I find interesting. Chatting on a chat site seems like a reasonable activity.

Your comment that I'm bawling is a bit off-base. I'm having a fantastic day (working on qualifying for a new home loan, just got approved for a 4.25%)....its been a long day sitting by the phone trading phone calls with my banker. So this debate has been a nice way to pass time between calls.
