Just off the Dream-Horrible cigar smell from room next door

Just heard on the news that California is making smoking Pot legal for everyone. This should be interesting (LOL). The State that started anti-smoking with regards to cigarettes is now making Pot smoking legal. How funny is that!!! So worried 2nd hand smoke may damage a 3 year old, etc. but now the 3 yr old can breathe it in and go around stoned...WOW!!!!!

 

Cigarette smoke disipates within a couple of feet of the cigarette itself. That's fact (grab a smoke and test it out)! Next cruise, light up a smoke, stand in the doorway of your room leading out to your balcony and you will see that the smoke exits the room...it does not pull in. Tried it on my last cruise a couple of weeks ago and it exits the room not pulls in. If you are neighbors on a balcony with someone smoking...you are not having smoke pouring onto your balcony or into your room, blowing in your face, smelling up your room, etc. You are not...period! The problem is you are an ANTI-SMOKER and when you see someone smoking (and in Port when you may get a "whiff") it sends you into a tailspin! The mere sight....OMG!!!!! You have options..book a Spa Room or sail Celebrity. Another option is have a drink, have some fun and lighten up!

So you contradict yourself the sentence after you say you have no problem with smokers smoking where Carnival allows them. Carnival allows smokers to smoke in their cabins and on their balconies. Period. So I call phoney baloney on your first sentence since your second sentence wants smokers NOT to smoke where they are allowed to.

No, I interpreted it to mean that you weren't being honest in your first sentence because smoking IS allowed on balconies and in cabins on Carnival.

 

And now you have made it clear that I understood you perfectly. You do have a problem with people smoking where they are allowed to despite saying that you didn't.

 

As others have suggested, a cruise line that doesn't allow cabin or balcony smoking is probably more your style.

I had two cruises booked with Celebrity when they announced the change to their smoking policy. Their new restrictions would have negitively impacted my enjoyment of my cruise.

 

So quess what! I cancelled both cruises and told them why. Then I rebooked balcony cabins on Carnival.

 

 

For all you non-smokers who are booking balconies... you should read iowagirl's quote above.

 

As other cruise lines tighten their rules on balcony smoking, it is having an effect on Carnival.

 

I use to be fine with my odds of getting a smoker if I booked a balcony. But the odds have changed.

 

Carnival is picking up all the other cruise lines smokers, as the other cruise lines stay more current with the general anit-smoking trends, we see all-around-us in our everyday life.

 

What's interesting is that if Carnival continues to welcome smokers from the other cruise lines who are shunning them, they will reach a tipping point where there are enough smokers that non-smoker, will not be able to enjoy a balcony and experience fresh sea air or relax on the balcony, under Carnival's current rules which randomly puts smokers and non-smokers next to each other for 7 to 10 days at a time with no chance of changing rooms like one would do on a land-based trip.

 

So the quote above is 100% accurate. The last cruise line who leaves their smoking on balcony policy intact will eventually attract so many smokers that they will lose business among the 80% who don't smoke. Carnival has headed down this path over the last 5 years. Will they become the "smokers last paradise" or will they hear more complaints from non-smokers who can't book balconies anymore? Something is going to happen... just not sure what? "The only constant in life is change" ;) And Carnival has been sitting quietly on the sidelines seeing how far they could go before the non-smokers noticed what was slowly happening.

Legalization of marijuana is up for consideration in the Nov.2 election. It is not a done deal.

How in the world did we all survive days gone by when nearly EVERYONE smoked, and smoked nearly EVERYWHERE... hosptial rooms, grocery stores, stadiums, hotels, business offices, you name it. I know that's not the way of the world any longer, but smoking is allowed in cabins & balconies on most Carnival ships, so I guess we all just need to suck it up (pardon the pun) & deal with it. :D

 

 

sadly, many of us did not survive, and some of us had to live in a shell until the laws started making it so we could leave our house. I get severe migraines from cigarette smoke and have gotten them for 20 years. When I started working, people were allowed to smoke in our office at work and there would be many days I had to excuse myself from a meeting to go vomit. You suck that up.

Prop 19 on the California ballot will only legalize it for persons over 21. Prohibit is from being smoke in public places (which a cruise ship is) and on school grounds. It carries stiff penalties for violation of any local statute and maintains the current regs on sales to minors, interstate commerce, use in places of employment, etc. Of course this is the proverbial nose of the camel under the tent, but latest polls show it with a slight advantage but many undecided voters and older voters in greater opposition, so still up in the air as to passage. This would not make it legal on crusie ships of foreign registry.

I've had balcony cabins on ships that allow smoking in the cabin and on the balcony and I rarely saw a neighbor out on them, forget about seeing neighbors all the time smoking every second.

 

I think it's like with cats, when a stranger goes to a cat owners home if they hate cats the cat zeroes in on them, rubbing up against them and so forth, even if usually the cat has better things to do.

 

I think the anti-smoker vibe is so huge around these people that their neighbors are overcome with a desire to smoke all the time.

Sounds like the same rules they have in place for cigarette smoke. My point was that a State that started the Anti-smoking bans with regards to cigarettes is now proposing to make an illegal drug which involves smoking...legal in "their" state. Ironic don't you think!

I've seen your threads before and you speak as if you have all the statistics on this when this is really just your opinion. Not fact!

 

What other cruise lines have banned smoking on balconies except Celebrity? As far as I know Princess, HAL & RCCL still have it. RCCL bans it in the rooms so I would imagine you will find more smoking on their balconies because those that would have booked an inside room, etc. is now paying the extra money and getting a balcony. Celebrity passengers are not leaving Celebrity to come to Carnival...they'll go to RCCL, Princess and HAL (or as many have posted on X's board...people are sneaking smokes on their balconies and staying with Celebrity).

 

Actually, your chances are less on Carnival that you will have a smoker next to you because of the fact they haven't banned it in the rooms.

 

Carnival has Spa Balconies and Celebrity does not allow smoking on their balconies. Anti-smokers who are so bothered by this that it "ruins" their cruise have options. Book a Spa on CCL or go Celebrity! By the way, I don't smoke!

There is another option for non-smokers. They have the option of booking the furthest balcony's forward, which would reduce there odds tremendously from having a smoker forward or upstream from them. But then what would they have to complain about.

Most people on vacation, especially on a cruise ship, like the option to enjoy clean air, especially on their balconey and in their own stateroom. I for one, don't want to smell cigarette/cigars in my stateroom when a smoker has the option to walk a few steps to the cigar bar to enjoy their cigarette/cigar or walk to an open deck for the same reason. So how about your OPTION to walk to enjoy your cigarette/cigar and really show all the non-smokers that you do care about their space. :):)On my last cruise there a lot of kids running around, I wonder who speaks for them, because they(the little kids) certainly were not smoking, just my thoughts, not COMPLAINING......just wondering.......kids have the right to clean air too!!:)

Mark, I am aware that X does not allow smoking in cabins or on balconies. RCCL from what I know does not allow smoking in cabins but the balcony is fine. I would assume that Azamara is the same as one of the 2 above policies.

 

My point is they are all the same corporate family who are tightening the smoking rules.

 

Are any of Carnival Corps other lines restricting balcony smoking - ie Princess, HAL, Cunard, etc?

 

I guess I don't see it as an industry wide change until Carnival, with the majority of lines, starts changing their policy on other lines.

 

I would think that in the end the amount of business Carnival Corp has picked up from the RCCL / X / Azamara restriction would equal the amount of customers lost to them for not changing their policies.

You forgot about the option smokers have of smoking in any portion of the ship where smoking is allowed. If they break the rules, that's one thing. If they aren't, then no one has a right to complain to them.

I think its nice to let people know what you might run into... because Carnival tries their best to keep this their dirty little secret (paying for a balcony doesn't mean you will be able to enjoy it, if you end up next to a heavy smoker for the week).

I agree with you on cruisers making educated decisions though based on the knowledge learned. I would not cruise X right now as I smoke and would not want to be able to smoke on my balcony. I would however cruise RCCL anytime as not smoking in the cabin is not an issue to me at all. Since I really don't cruise for ports, the Oasis and Allure intrigue me with their options and features and as long as I can smoke on my balcony, they will be in the mix of vacation choices.

 

When Carnival Corp. and their lines (not just Carnival Cruise Line) starts changing their policies, then I will have decisions to make.

I also have the option of smoking in my room or my cabin since I am on Carnival and they allow it. You have the option of picking a cruise line that doesn't give me that option.

Why would kids be in my cabin or on my balcony? Their parents are responsible for keeping them out of smoking areas and I sure won't be inviting them into my cabin.

John Heald said the "experiment" on the Splendor has been decided...they will keep the piano bar and disco NON smoking...they didn't have much problems and yes they realize it is "California" but John also says the "beards" are aware of the problems and needs...and John himself says that smokers seem to be able to manage by going outside for a smoke

 

Times change....you can smoke on your balcony now...but what of the future?? The "spa" cabins are NON smoking.....my guess is Carnival will renovate other ships and add spa (non smoking) cabins

 

there is truly NO going back...no ship is going to allow smoking in the dining room or elevators yet years ago you could puff away there

 

smoking will become more limited....MY guess is that the "splendor" rules will begin to spread through the fleet

Hopefully since Carnival is following industry trends and enforcing more stringent rules that they will also follow the example of Cunard and kick people off the ship that cause problems and arguments. That would have been a great option to see on my last cruise when we were sitting in the smoking area on the Lido deck and a group {3} of anti-smoking "ladies" sat beside us and almost immediately began the fake cough hand wave thing. That wasn't bad, actually a bit comical albeit annoying, however when in rather loud voices bagan talking rather rudely about us like we couldn't hear them and than making comments that included smoking,trash and hag in the same sentence I asked the wait staff to do something. Security was called however nothing was done oh except it was suggested we move. Boy an old excuse me but you will be leaving the ship in the next port and by the way stay in your cabin until we get there because you three are being terrible to our other passengers and causing problems sure would have been nice.

 

Limit my smoking more .....ok....If I don't abide remove me from the ship.....ok

One thing I can't quite figure out is Carnival not allowing electronic cigs in non-smoking venues. What would be the problem with that and how could anybody complain.
