Singer4Him Posted September 23, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 23, 2010 Some friends went to Nassau and said that they enjoyed renting a jeep and cruising around the island. We did the same thing a few years ago in Cozumel but now we're being told not to rent anything with wheels in Mexico. Is it still safe to rent a vehicle in Nassau and where will you find the rental agencies?
scubagirrl Posted September 24, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 24, 2010 Some friends went to Nassau and said that they enjoyed renting a jeep and cruising around the island. We did the same thing a few years ago in Cozumel but now we're being told not to rent anything with wheels in Mexico. Is it still safe to rent a vehicle in Nassau and where will you find the rental agencies? Relatively safe, if you can drive on the left and avoid crazy drivers. Locals are very aggressive drivers. Jitney's driver dangerously and have no problem cutting you off, and there are no drunk driver enforcement. IF you decide to do this, stay to the main roads, and if a place looks a bit scary, turn around and go elsewhere. There are some places that you shouldn't wander into. Also, once the sun starts to go down, the thugs come out.. so be sure your off the back streets after 5 or so. We have some very bold thugs that just flag down cars stuck in traffic to rob them. Be aware ... all is NOT paradise here. There are several rental companies around the area with drop off and pick up services. Budget and Avis come to mind. BTW, the off the beaten path beaches are oftentimes the sights of robberies and assault. This is not the place to be finding that romantic getaway spot. Wish that wasn't true, but it is. MileHiCrzr Posted September 25, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 25, 2010 Avis has a facility within two blocks of the port. I rent from them all the time and have never had a problem. I don't know what day you are going to be there - but do inquire about road work in town. A traffic jam can cost you easily an hour's time if you're not familiar with the side roads. Give yourself plenty of time to get back to the ship.
SunsetLove10 Posted September 26, 2010 #4 Share Posted September 26, 2010 We almost decided to rent a car there last week for 4 adults to take around the island, but once we got off the boat and decided to take the Jitney (public bus transit) we were SOOOO glad we didn't rent a car. Our bus driver cut off cars like crazy! They driving was very aggresive like others have mentioned. Be warned!
