what's your fave tanning lotion?

DH and I will be starting to tan in the next few weeks and those damn lotions are so outrageously expensive, I was going to look for some on the net for cheaper. Looking for recommendations, no bronzers please. also, just out of curiosity, can these be used outside (as well as in the tanning bed) with the same results?

I know you said you hate bronzers and I agree.....except, 3 years ago I discovered Australian Gold SPF 8 Spray Gel with Instant Bronzer. I use it in the winter when we go to Florida for a month and also on cruises. All other bronzers make me orangy but this one is pretty good. We buy it on the ship but you can also get it at Walmart. It's about $10 for an 8oz bottle. I wish it were a 15 SPF and I think I did get a 15 one time, but didn't find any on our cruise this winter. I sound like a commercial but it really does give you a natural tan without getting you all burned up. After the bronzer fades off you'll still have a nice tan because SPF 8 isn't all that strong. Try it.

Australian Gold makes a nice one...it is a dry oil spray. No bronzers,or tingle in it,and since it is a dry oil,you aren't going to be greased up like the Thanksgiving turkey. I bought is where I tan for $15,which is cheap compared to most of the other ones. I love it,and I have tried them all. I use it outside,as I have an olive complexion and don't burn,but keep in mind it has no sunscreen in it,so you might want to try a lotion with a sunscreen outside if you burn.:D

I like the to use lotion and not oil...I hate that greasy feeling.

 

My favorite suntan lotions are Neutrogena - these 2 are my favorite - doesn't even feel like you have anything on - so light and oil free:

I have had a lot of pre-cancerious spots removed from my body and I'm only 29! They were all from sun damage so I have to be very careful in the sun. These products are great and recommended by my dermatologist!

it's what I use and so far it's working great. Again , it is a bronzer/self tanning cream. I find it gives a really nice even tan:)

I paid about $13 CDN for it at walmart (can't remember the size off hand)

 

I have only used a tanning bed twice in my life. I think there is a reason you have to buy there special tanning bed creams - helps to give you a deeper tan I believe, kind of like those dark tanning cream/oils you can buy and lay in the sun with and reacts to the sun. I do not think using the self tanning cream in the bed would help with what you are trying to achieve.. but I may be wrong.

no, I wasn't asking about self-tanners, there's "bronzers" that have the same orange coloring stuff in them that are made for the tanning beds. and I was, actually, originally asking about the lotions that the salons sell, but also need info on good lotions with a little sunscreen for when we're actually on our trip.

You have a lot to learn if you don't think you get any color with an SPF of 30! You should never go in the sun with anything lower than SPF 30 on! You're asking for wrinkles and skin cancer if you do!

 

I use 30 my first 2 days in the sun and then drop down to 15 and always come home with a nice bronze glow - never burnt and peeling like everyone else I see who uses 4 or 6......

I think everyone is different though. I don't get any sun with 30 sunblock, but I'm totally fine with that.

4 or 6 is pointless and dangerous - you might as well use milk!

 

Actually even with 30 you get wrinkles etc, unless your sun screen contains a particular ingredient (that has slipped my mind). You may not get color and/or it may keep you from getting burnt but the harmful rays still get through.

I use Hawaiian Tropic SPF 30 & also their Faces SPF 30.

 

I have an olive complexion, & still get a nice tan using these products.

 

If cruising to the Caribbean in the summer, I then use an SPF 45, because the sun is even stronger.

My favorite tanning lotion for the beds is Smoke Black but it has a bronzer in it. My second favorite is Babie - it is supposed to firm also but doesn't have any bronzer. The lotions are not for being outside though. I usually go once a week for 12 minutes and just before a cruise I increase to twice and then three times a week the month before. That gives me a nice tan without being over tan. Then on the cruise I just use an SPF 30.

My favorite tanning lotion for the tanning bed are the "X" products: X-Speed (Step 1) and X-Power (Step 2).

 

For regular sunscreen I buy the Coppertone Sport "No Rub" sunscreen. It is an of 30. This stuff is awesome and because you don't rub it in even my kids put it on without a fuss. HTH

yeah, thanks for all the on topic info on lotions everyone. and to all the people perched on their soapboxes out there, and it just continues to amaze me how people get so freaking self-righteous on simple, innocent posts...just incase you hadn't noticed, I'm an adult, capable of making my own decisions and will be doing so :p . considering the few tanning sessions beforehand, along with this week we cruise in May, will probably be the only time I'll get to spend outside all year, I'm thinking my chances for wrinkles or skin cancer are greatly reduced. not that I asked for any opinions in those areas.

Yeah, I about keeled over when I saw the prices in my salon. If you ahve an expensive brand you like like the Smoke line...do a google search like this : tanning+lotions+indoor I came up with a ton of sites that sell it MUCH cheaper than the salons.

 

 

BUT rather than do that, I went to Sally Beauty Supply to see what they had. They have a brand called Sexy U. It is called Hemp and it says on the bottle, "stimulating tan intensifier", although none of the tingle stuff. Says infused with coQ10 and Soy. I LOVE it and it was only $9.99.

 

I also bought the other lotion they had there, same brand, Sexy U, but it is called Frigid. Says on the bottle, "Ultra Cool Bronzing creme, cools and sooths skin while bronzers deliver exceptionally dark tanning results". Also has the CoQ10 and Soy. Didn't like the idea of the self tanner stuff, but this seems to be different. I think what ever is in this as far as self tanning agents must be really very little. Don't really notice the "cooling" effect tho. It was also $9.99 and I love this one too.

 

The price they charge for those brands in the salon is a joke. Especially now that I know what I can get them for on the web. GL!!

 

Oh, as far as sunblock for vacation, I like the Hawiian tropic brands because of the smell. I think I either have spf 30 or 45.

I have gotten some really good buys on indoor tanning lotion on ebay. They seem to run about 1/4 of the price. Even with shipping they have been a great value.

From everything I've read, the posters seemed to be trying to answer your question about what lotions they liked. I have no doubt that you are "an adult, capable of making my own decisons" . . . think that my reply was warranted. There's little doubt in my mind that this reply doesn't leave much open to interpretation...whoever this person is (or thinks they are) they are clearly telling me what I "should" or shouldn't do, and what I'm "asking for" or not. And I'm really interested in knowing how she knows all the burned people she sees are using SPF 4 or 6....neat trick, you should try it in the casino.

I am an esthetician in Hawaii. I see the effects of sun damage on the skin everyday wrinkles, hyperpigment and scars from cancer removal. Experts say it is likely that one out of three people will develop skin cancer and that the sun is the most damaging thing there is to the health of the skin.:(

 

You can get a great tan through a 30 SPF sunscreen and protect your skin. Epicuren makes a great sunscreen called Solar Extreme cream. People come to Hawaii and want to go home with some “color”. What ever floats your boat. I used to get so frustrated with people about the whole “sun” thing but now I give then the information I have and they can do with it what they want. I used to use Fake Bake self-tanner. I got a good result with it. I have stopped trying to be tan! I am of Irish English heritage and I am not supposed to be tan. Lol :)

 

One of the things I like best about this board is all the different information I get and all the different points of view. Sometimes I don’t agree with a certain point of view but I usually feel the information was given out of the kindness of someone’s heart and with good intentions.For my part I would like to keep it this way. It is all open to personal interpretation.

I think because this is a message board and is read by many people hoping to get answers, the responses sometimes are more broad then the original poster intended. A response can be input for others who were enticed by the title and come back again as the responses go on. The responses may have been input to serve the many veiwers, rather then the poster. If all works out the original poster gets their answer and the rest of us get a little education.
