Totally foo-foo fashion question for the ladies...

Recommended Posts

Hi Ladies!

Just wondering... I'm 42, have acrylic nails and usually go for a French manicure, but for the cruise I want something more colorful and Caribbean. Any suggestions, for fingernails & toes? I have no idea what colors are "in" this year, could use some advice. Any ideas? Thanks for the help!

I would just go for something bright and tropical, like a nice coral color or something.

Also, this may sound weird, but I promise it's cute. A lot of nail places can put a little "picture" on your nails... like a palm tree or something. I'd do that on one of my big toes.

Tangerine is big for the summer. The company O.P.I. has 7 great, highly unusual colors they introduced for this summer. I don't think I'd wear them on them on my fingernails, but they're great for the toes. Have fun--be bold.

You can alway use a french manicure with different color tip. I say stay with that french look it goes with everything and do your toes in a bright color. Trust me it will look classy!

I will also be going on the Mairner of the seas
August 29th looking foward to it!

For what it's worth, my favorite color for summer is OPI's cajun shrimp.

OPI has some great summer colors out right now -- Sonora Sunset and Aphrodites Pink Nightie are two of my favorites.

O.P.I. has coral pink very pretty. Also go into NY and have your nails airbrushed. Here in LA we are wearing flowers on our toes. They may even be able to draw on tropical flowers.

Some people are doing French Tips with various colors, be careful, depending on the color you don't get the same refined look as with traditional french tips. The pale colors work best with the "reverse french tip".

The hot colors right now are Pinks and Corals. Definatley do a color since the sun will turn your French to a very ugly orange and you'll be very sad. I'd stick to the french only because it will go with any outfit...could always do colourful toes and get some nail art on a couple fingers and your big toes to tie it all together. (they can do anything.. sunsets/flowers/palm trees)

Also... I get 'gel' nails, and the lady that does them paints the tip white bbeforebefore
quote:

quote:

efore she seals it, so the colour is actually in the nail and doesn't fade/chip so it will last u the full length of your cruise. (actually lasts me until my next fill)

The cover of the Nails magazine they get at my nail place had the coolest toe nails on the cover...
they were different widths of stripes going down each toe (not across) in differents colors (medium sky blue, sun yellow, lime green, white & coral). On each big toe was a white outline of a hibiscus. They called it a kind of California/surfer girl look.
I now have one more reason I can't wait for our cruise to get here!!

Anybody ever had a French on round nails? I have been thinking of getting a French manicure since it will match with everything I take, but, on me, I can't stand the square nails. I always get my toe nails to match my finger nails, so I guess they would be French also.
Thanks for any ideas.

Hi again everyone!

Thanks soooo much for all your responses. My DH thinks it's a riot that my mom and I spend so much time talking about people's hair (especially TV news anchors/reporters), but wait 'til I tell him how much nail polish talk we have here!

I love some of your ideas. My regular nail place does beautiful airbrushing but I was always a little leery of it, I mean I'm not a teenager anymore, but maybe for the cruise.... one little flower on a big toenail? Could be cute and fun!

And I thought the same thing as you FinelyCruising, that French nails in the sun and in the salt water won't be a pretty sight after a week. Had that problem before at the Jersey Shore, the bright white tips turned a nasty yellow. Enchanted, what are "gel" nails? I don't think I've seen them.

EydieG, I've seen a French manicure on rounded nails before, in fact it's pretty common around here. It looks very pretty, very feminine. I like the squarish shape, but I say go for it if you want round.

Oh and joyceyw, I think that colored-French-tip thing is called (appropriately enough) a Tropical Manicure. A friend's wife gets them in the wildest colors, like candied-cherry with a line of silver glitter defining the tip. (FYI, his wife is 23, I think.)

One other question, CAN I get a different color on my toenails? Like maybe a complementary color, a little darker, or a little brighter (those new OPI colors sound so nice)? Is there some guideline for this?

And winncove and LESTRELA, I guess I'll see you on the ship! Where can DH and I sign up for CC Meet & Mingle get together?

Thanks again everyone! I really appreciate your help!

Welcome NJ! go back to top of pg. for moderators posts..."M&M now online" & follow the directions there. There's also a Roll Call section for "Mariner 8/29" that has posts from just our cruise. [Please ignore all mine re:clock! I finally realized the clock is updated even on old posts, altho a few were hung up. Duh! So much to learn here for us obsessive/compulsive types.] This board has become an OCB thing for me 'cause I just can't wait! NJR ---

Yes -- you definitely can wear different shades on your toes and nails. I would either keep them in the same color -ex., light pink on nails, dark pink on toes, or french on nails and any color on toes. I tend to like the softer colors, during the summer, on my nails, I guess because they are natural. I keep them slightly longer than a sport manicure. Too long drives me nuts, but I can certainly appreciate how pretty they look. You might try a pale iridescent coat on top of the french mancicure, before the gloss. I do this often; it gives your nails a little shimmer and a much softer look for the french. Very pretty.

Have a great trip! You can always try a manicure on the ship, if your nails get yucky.

I'll be on the Empress from Bayonne to Bermuda on 8/21.... can't wait!

The only color I'd forget about is red. I did it for our December cruise and it got old real fast. If you don't already have them - a toe ring and and ankle chain would look great for the daytime. I don't wear a ton of jewelry to the beach but these seem to give your bathing suit a little extra oomph.

The place where I get my nails done call it an "American Manicure" I get gels and the way they do it, where they paint the white on, let it set, and then paint clear over it, it lasts and lasts and lasts!

My friend had her polish ruined by sunscreen. She was renewing her vows on board and had them perfect. She had them fixed on the ship She wasn't real crazy about the Ships nail colors, but it was better than the mess the sunscreen made.

My polish used to get ruined by sunscreen.
Now that i get the gel nails with the colour "built in" i haven't had a problem.

njreindeer- gel nails start the same way but they use a gel powder. It's not as smelly and i find they look a little more natural, find them more comfortable, don't break as easy, don't 'lift' like acrylics do, and last a lot longer between fills.
If u ask them to put the color on before they seal them then you won't have to worry about them getting yucky.
They put some clear gel on the nails (get them to do it after they paint the tip), then they put your hands in this machine to get the gel to set...
with absolutely no polish on your nails, they still look like they've got a clear coat on, whereas with acrylics, once you take your polish off, they look dry.

Gels are a few $ more but they're worth it and you won't have to worry about your nails at all while away.

Enchanted,

Do you know of anyone here in the US that does gel nails? I haven't heard of them. I'm going to the nail shop today, but will ask, they sound great. I can go a month between fills, but its the colors that start to fade.

njreindeer, I have not had a problem with my french tips turning yellow, not to say that it didn't happen to you, do you think it was the sea water? Also, french tips on the toes are soo cute to me. But it chips really fast.

The lastest thing here is Los Angeles is to have acrylic added to your toes. Don't ask me why there is a need to add length but they are doing it. A girl asked me if I wanted to add to my big toes, I was like nope, they are long enough. Plus can you imagine the pain if you break a toenail? I sure all of us wearing acrylic nails have broken a few, and know how painful some breaks can be.

I'm 34, and get the "Tropical Manicure", so don't worry about age, go with what you like. If you like it then it looks fabulous on you.

Acrylics on the toes????? yucky! No offense to anyone who may like that, but on your feet? I actually did see a woman in Florida a few years ago who looked like she had tips on her toes - I found it very gross, nails should not click the pavement when you walk. I would never do that in a million years.
I too started doing the gels a couple of months ago, and I think it is worth it.
Almost any nail salon does the gels - they're just not done as frequently as the acrylycs because they cost more. I do remember when I would just do the acrylycs and the french manicure, which I prefer to call "American Manicure" did chip and didn't last too long. I agree I saw somebody get the "american Manicure" look on their toes and it did look really cute. I wear my toe nails too short to make it work - I have long-toe-nail-a-phobia.
