Family in Galveston

We will be taking a cruise out of Galveston in January 2011. We will have a full day in Galveston prior to our cruise. We will have multiple families with children and are looking for some fun options for spending the day and also dining. What are some reccomendations for a family friendly day/evening in Galveston?

is there any public transportation in Galveston besides cabs? We will be spending the Sunday after our cruise there in November and trying to figure out how to get around and what to do. We can't get into our room until 3.
