LiveLoveCruise Posted October 15, 2010 #1 Share Posted October 15, 2010 We no longer pay for cable T.V. for more than one reason. But, I noticed recently that over a year we'd save enough $$ for a Carnival Cruise. Even if that would've been the original reason, I'd still trade in a second. If given a choice... what other luxuries would you trade? NFL, Family Portraits, Birthday Parties, Christmas Gifts, Dining out?

CapeCodCruiser Posted October 15, 2010 #8 Share Posted October 15, 2010 DH & I quit giving gifts long ago - I actually have finished shopping - for my life - all done - don't need to buy anything more except the essentials - groceries a few clothes, that's about it. We are in the "un-stuffing" phase - trying to get rid of most things - downsize to an RV full time and travel.
Bookworm1971 Posted October 15, 2010 #9 Share Posted October 15, 2010 Dinner out or lunch takeouts, etc., lottery tickets and trips to the casino. Since we moved in together my boyfriend and I already save enough a month to cover a 4 day trip to Vegas once a year. Stopping No Cook Fridays would almost cover a cruise if we added it to the Vegas trip savings.
The_Geek Posted October 15, 2010 #10 Share Posted October 15, 2010 If we cut out our cable TV we would save $4200 per year. We currently pay $350/month

Name Of The Game Posted October 15, 2010 #13 Share Posted October 15, 2010 We don't smoke or buy lottery tickets, don't belong on a bowling league, seldom eat out, and stay home on weekends. It's worth it to cruise! We don't have HBO and Showtime but not giving up the basic plus cable.
kml2000 Posted October 15, 2010 #14 Share Posted October 15, 2010 I gave up drinking a long time ago to save money. I was never a heavy drinker, but did have wine in the fridge and maybe a beer every now and then. Drinking is very expensive, even if you aren't a heavy drinker. I'm a single Mom and there are lots of small things I gave up. We eat out once a week or so. We gave up eating at the pricey steak houses because I figured out how to grill a good steak. I can also cook seafood to our liking so gave that up too. I can't make a Chick-Fil-A sandwich so we still eat that!!!!! We have WAY scaled back our holiday gift giving...... However.......I would have a hard time giving up my cable - FoodNetwork!!!! :p

Rare Tapi Posted October 15, 2010 #17 Share Posted October 15, 2010 But, I noticed recently that over a year we'd save enough $$ for a Carnival Cruise. The cost of our upcoming cruise aboard the Fascination for 3 passengers in an oceanview cabin is roughly the cost of one month of day care for our infant son. I guess I can try to find people to take care of our son for a month and use that money to go cruising instead! :D

USNUZULOOSE Posted October 15, 2010 #19 Share Posted October 15, 2010 dWell, we do not have cable only netflix. So only 9 dollars a month. No car payments, just regular monthly bills. So I dont have any left to give up. Its tough enough just to put money away for other essentials. So we wont be cruising for a very long time. Oh well at least I get to read about other peoples stories. Jo
ChefSusan Posted October 15, 2010 #20 Share Posted October 15, 2010 We don't dine out as much as we used to, don't drink a lot when we are on ships, book independent tours, and don't have children. One thing that works hugely in our favor is that we live in Florida and have all five ports within driving distance. We also book our cruises at least 6-9 months in advance, and always watch for price drops whenever possible.

So pretty much you'd have to give up porn:eek::D:eek: come on who pays for porn, iso easy to find free online. lol

gargoyle999 Posted October 15, 2010 #23 Share Posted October 15, 2010 I'm about to give up my XM Radio that I have had for many many years. $27/month won't buy a cruise but will go a ways to paying for some expenses onboard. I'd give up our landline too and save about $45/month if I thought DW's head wouldn't explode if I did.
LiveLoveCruise Posted October 15, 2010 Author #24 Share Posted October 15, 2010 The flatscreen is connected to the Internet. With all of the Internet TV, cable is free or at least dirt cheap and I keep control of what the family watches.
