Ykgorbie Posted October 26, 2010 Author #40 Share Posted October 26, 2010 SAN JUAN (5pm Oct. 11th) We spent embarkation day, Sunday and most of Monday catching up with our dear friends who had joined us for the 2nd cruise. We've cruised twice with this couple before and I really couldn't imagine going with anyone else. The 4 of us have such a blast when we're together and we go back a bit....they used to live in Yellowknife - wonderful friends. None of us had found any excursion that we wanted to book ahead of time, so just took our time getting off of the ship in San Juan. It had been raining a bit as we docked in San Juan and was threatening to rain some more, so the four of us had fun designing my husband a "rainsuit". Check this out ! There were a lotta laughs putting that together !!! He didn't end up using it folks....frankly, it was SO hot and SO humid in San Juan when we got off, that he would have perished in that bag, lol. Anyway, the weather held off and we went walking towards the water. Saw a lot of the buildings had lights on them along this cobblestone walkway. There were some really interesting buildings and I think we were all a little sorry that we didn't book an excursion of some kind. We just walked and walked. The cobblestones were a bit slippery, so if it's rained and you do choose to just walk around, make sure you've got good footwear on. Did I mention the humidity? lol. It was so humid ! We kept ducking into the stores that were open and were air conditioned to get some relief. Not much for shopping along the way - imho, there are much better shopping ports than this one. We stopped into Senor Frogs, but the lineup was too long, so we found another little lounge in one of the hotels, had a couple of brewskies and headed back to the ship. Tennessee Rose Posted October 26, 2010 #41 Share Posted October 26, 2010 Great review! I'm just realizing this was the same cruise we were on! It didn't hit me until you mentioned the Grand Cayman weather. I hated missing the stingray excursion. Oh, well, a good excuse to go back!

Ykgorbie Posted October 26, 2010 Author #43 Share Posted October 26, 2010 JUST SOME COMMENTS ON THE CRUISE : - we received a complimentary fruit basket in our cabin the day we sailed on the 2nd of our B2B's. - unlike the first cruise, when Dh and I had chosen "Anytime Dining", this cruise we chose the Early Seating. It had always worked well for the four of us before....although the food was wonderful, we did feel that the waitstaff didn't take the time to get to know your name, etc as we had found on previous cruises. Also, one evening inparticular, we waited forever to get our meals. I don't know why this was, maybe cutbacks? Maybe short on staff that evening? Anyway, it didn't ruin our cruise in any way, just sharing something we noticed. - I didn't receive another "THIS ONE'S ON US" free drink card for the casino on this cruise. But that's ok., I certainly wasn't expecting the first one ! - we opted to try the Steakhouse for the first time ever. It was above and beyond what we had expected. Definitely worth the $30 per person. Amazing food and amazing service. You could choose one appetizer, one salad, one main course and one dessert. This was the Lobster Bisque. The warm Spinach Salad. The Cheesecake. Omg, I was so full, but I could never say no to Cheesecake, lol. It was large enough for the four of us !

gapearl Posted October 26, 2010 #45 Share Posted October 26, 2010 The Freedom is my favorite ship so far. That's so great that you got to do a B2B. Hopefully one day I will be able to as well. That is so awesome you got free drinks in the casino! I wish I did on my last cruise! BTW, I also LOOOOOVE the Doubletree chocolate chip cookies. ;) Keep it coming. Ykgorbie Posted October 26, 2010 Author #46 Share Posted October 26, 2010 ST. THOMAS 7am to 6pm, Oct. 12th/10 The Dream in the far background and a Princess ship between us and the Dream. Our friends had a excursion booked (through Carnival) on St. Thomas. It was the "Captain Nautica's Ultimate Snorkel Expedition" and it was $79.95 for 3-1/2 hrs. BTW, if anyone is wanting scans of the Carnival Shore Excursions booklet for this cruise, I would be happy to oblige. Anyway, our friends said they really enjoyed the excursion and they even saw a barracuda up close. (yikes) We decided to stay on the ship (kicking myself now for not going and doing some serious shopping) and met up with Don and Susan after their excursion was over. The four of us had booked the "Magen's Bay Beach Getaway" , $33.95 for 3 hours. Basically, we were just taken to Magen's Bay (lots of steep, winding roads with great scenery) and once there, we rented chairs and bought ourselves a water football - turned out to be a great purchase for $15. We had a brewskie or two and enjoyed ourselves in the water. The beach area is nice and we were not hounded by anybody at all on this beach. Had a great time. We stopped along the way back to the port and were able to take a picture of Magen's Bay from above: Ships all leaving port at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. We heard the Dream was delayed leaving (not sure why), but they were indeed, the last ship out of there that evening. Next stop: Antigua !
