Epic Cruise = Epic Disappointment

Agree with 4texans! Why anyone feels the need to attack the OP because this person did not "like" the EPIC is beyond me... Could the OP's opinions be spot on or could the OP just have a bad attitude??? Who knows? Everyone is different and every reader of the post will take away a different value from the review....

And the name of this site is: cruise critic, where one would expect reviews of cruises, therefore we should welcome everyone's reviews, good or bad and in between. And save flaming and attacking for those people who are nasty about other things - not ships!

Maybe we need to step back and not rush to throw everyone under the bus...My motive and purpose for responding to this post was that my experience was a very different one and in no way did I get aggressive with my post and consider it an attack on the OP...but then again that is IMO, only...

It all boils down to a person's personal level of standads. NCl is a very mass market line and it nicely meets the current standards of the masses. Occassionally someone with higher standards gets seduced by the advertising and general hype of a new ship and hence this type of review. For the vast majority of folks NCL works well for them and they need not mount an Alamo last stand defence against such a review. Besides I read NCL is brining on line two more such ships. Everyone other than the habadashers and fancy dressmakers should be thrilled with this news.

Agreed - your post to the OP was very polite and respectful.... I applaud your tact and tone and as a possible cruiser on the EPIC in the future it is helpful to hear a respectful difference in experience (as you stated) when addressing a negative review. You didn't bash or flame the OP for his opinions, you just stated that you had different opinions on the same ship.

I'm so tired of this recycled concept that anything anyone says that is negative is honest, true, factual, or otherwise somehow more genuine than anything positive. People need to climb down off their high horses and realize that their opinion is just THEIRS. Assuming that when someone shares a differing opinion it can't possibly be their honest, informed, and unbiased opinion is ludicrous - IN MY OPINION.

FACTS are measurable and able to be supported by clear and inarguable evidence. When I say, 'My bedspread is blue,' this is a fact.

OPINIONS are based on our personal life experience, our outlook, our feelings, our individual senses, and a whole assortment of other opinions. When I say, 'My bedspread is soft,' this is an opinion.

Bravo!!! So well said.

Perhaps it is time to call a truce of sorts here and let everyone's 'opinions' stand. Let's give everyone some credit and allow them to make their own decisions with the information at hand.

Coffeebean.....I see your points, but you would probably admit that most people hate using public bathrooms....no?

If that is indeed the case, then I don't know why anyone would want to welcome those aspects of public bathrooms that many detest (lack of privacy, sound, odor etc..) into their living space that they are stuck in for seven days and pay good money to do so.

I realise that this isn't a problem for some, but it is for others and will continue to be so whether the bathroom door is opaque, translucent, clear, glass block, faux brick....whatever.

Some people just don't think that the bathroom door on the Epic is a sufficient enough barrier between them and the rest of the cabin and I don't think that opinion will ever change.

By the way, I like your solution for the smell issue. Glad to see you made it work for you.

The Epic's translucent doors offer a much better barrier than a stall in a public restroom and I didn't mean to infer that it was on par with public restroom facilities. I do see your point, however. There are folks who will never accept these translucent doors and they will always consider them a problem. I will reiterate what I said earlier...I loved the translucent door. Besides letting natural light in during the day, they also let in the light from the cabin at night so if you want a softly lit bathroom, it was wonderful.

Is there some reason why your children are immune to people's opinions?

If "opinions are just that....opinions", and we should be able to disregard them as relates to a ship, then so should you be able to disregard them as relates to your children, no?

My point here is that logically, you are correct...these are just opinions. But emotionally, they're insulting to anyone who cares about the ship (or in your case...your children).

It is easy to understand why people become defensive, ESPECIALLY in light of the original post which was, in tone, offensive.

It was a very aggressive posture, and when attacked, people naturally tend to take a defensive stance.

So, there are times when opinions are not just opinions. Sometimes they are lies. Sometimes they are flames. Sometimes they are cheerleading, and sometimes they are attacks.

as my homies say... 'word.' ;)

It amazes me how two people can come off the same ship and have such different impressions.

Just finished reading this review cited on another thread:

http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=73969

where the reviewer, Bgem75 says: "We had the best time on the best ship with the best food, entertainment and service we have ever experienced."

when I came across this thread.

According to Bgem75's review the Epic is the best ship ever, and everything is wonderful. Yet the OP here says its loud, smoky and horrible and says: "The most exciting part for me was stepping off the ship in Miami at the end of the cruise."

Neither opinion seems particularly credible.

Until I get to see for myself, I'll assume the truth lies somewhere in between.

Hello Bgem75 here!

The only place we experienced smoke was walking through the casino. I am very allergic to smoke and never had a problem. I just walked a bit quicker through the casino!

The cabin design we look foward to and had no issues with.

We never had a problem with things being to loud. We could easily hold a conversation in almost any venue.

As for the comment card..ours was left in our room the night before we disembarked. It was smaller than other cruise lines but we had nothing to complain about.

I look at it this way. Your cruise is what you make of it. We booked this cruise because it appealed to us. It was the right fit for us. We new exactly what we were getting into before we sailed. We dont let things bother us while on vacation. We are there to have a good time..we only get one week a year to do something like this!! We went with the attitude that no one was going to ruin this and no one did. Even the kids on this cruise were the most well behaved children i have ever seen at sea...Ever.

We loved it and are looking to go again!!

I had such an awful time on the Epic last July (Eastern Carib.) that I re-booked the EPIC for April 2011 (Western Carib.) just to punish myself and my significant other.

Thanks...I am now LMAO! i try to punish myself every year with an NCL cruise and sometimes I even manage to punish myself twice in one year!:D

Just pointing something out - you say you had a cruddy time yet you avoided the casino, and alternate dining , which is something that NCL is known for. Did you ever try talking to guest services? We have sailed with NCL and never run into these problems before, and they have guest feedback cards at Guest Services.
